Our local beaches are open, school is almost out, and the season of fun in the sun is upon us!

While you enjoy warm summer days, please keep safety in mind. Here are a few safety tips to remember as you enjoy the waters of Lake Michigan this season:
• Swim with a buddy, even in lifeguarded areas. Never swim alone, regardless of your age or level of swimming skills.
• Be aware of hazards, such as underwater obstacles, sharp objects in the sand, and inclement weather conditions. Pay attention to posted warning signs.
• Always enter unknown or shallow water cautiously. Only dive in water that is clearly marked as safe for diving, and that is at least 10 feet deep with no underwater obstacles.
• Pay attention to posted signage and buoys that denote a beach’s swim zone. Stay within the boundaries of the swim zone.
• Know what to do in a water emergency – including how to safely help someone in trouble in the water, call for emergency services, and perform CPR if needed.

While it looks like it will be a beautiful weekend to visit the waterfront, please swim only in areas monitored by a lifeguard and remain aware that rip currents may form, which are extremely dangerous. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore—with the current rather than against it—to move out of the rip current area and call for help if you can.
