𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 | 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 | 𝟑:𝟑𝟎𝐩𝐦

Humboldt County Emergency Management has received an update from the U.S. Wildland Fire Service (BLM) regarding the McConnell Fire.

Increased winds have caused some interior fire activity and hot spots to flare up within the existing containment area. The fire remains within established containment lines, and there is currently no threat to the public.

Crews are using water and retardant to cool hot spots and reinforce containment lines. Residents in the area may continue to see smoke, and at times visible flames, from within the burned area. This does not mean the fire has escaped containment.

Because of the amount of remaining heat and fuel within the fire perimeter, portions of the McConnell Fire are expected to continue smoldering until significant moisture or snowfall occurs.

Fire personnel will continue to patrol, monitor and conduct mop-up operations as needed to keep the fire within the established containment area.

As always, if you see new smoke or flames, especially outside the known fire area, please report it by calling 911. Do not assume visible smoke or fire has already been reported.

National Preparedness Month ends today, but preparedness should stay current. Review your hazards, household plan, emergency supplies, medications, documents, animal plans, alert methods and neighbor contacts.

𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙠: Put a reminder on your calendar to review your plan again before winter.

Know who around you may need information or extra help during an emergency. Older adults, people with disabilities, people living alone and households without internet access may need a direct check-in.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸: Pick one neighbor to check in with and exchange emergency contact information.

Keep phones and backup batteries charged. Store flashlights and extra batteries where you can find them. Plan backup power for medical equipment and refrigerated medicines. Keep shelf-stable food and water available.

𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: Never operate a generator inside a home or garage. Use it outdoors and away from doors and windows.

Animals need their own supplies, transportation and destination. Keep food, water, medications, identification and records with your emergency supplies. For livestock, know where animals will go, keep trailers accessible and practice loading before conditions are urgent.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸: Put animal supplies together and write down where you would take them.

Do not depend on one source during an emergency. Use multiple trusted alert methods, including Humboldt County Connect, Humboldt County Emergency Management alerts, HCEM social media, radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts and weather alerts.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸: Check your phone settings and make sure at least two alert methods work for you.
