This spring, Jean McNair 4th grade students brought learning to life through a beautiful garden project made possible by a grant awarded to 4th grade teacher Mrs. Christine Draves from the Golden Apple Foundation of Rockford.
Working together, each 4th grade classroom designed and planned a garden bed in front of Jean McNair Elementary. Students researched and considered important factors such as sunlight and shade requirements, while also selecting flowers that support pollinators like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
The project began during our March Kids Who Care Day, when students started the planning process and worked collaboratively to develop their garden designs. After patiently waiting for more favorable spring weather, students and teachers brought their plans to life in early May by planting and creating the beautiful gardens that now welcome visitors to our school.
This hands-on project provided students with opportunities to apply science, problem-solving, teamwork, and environmental stewardship in a meaningful way while making our school grounds more beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
A special thank you to Mrs. Draves, as well as our 4th grade team of teachers and paraprofessionals, the Winnebago School District Maintenance Department, and the Golden Apple Foundation of Rockford for helping make this incredible learning experience possible!
Be sure to stop by Jean McNair this summer and check out the wonderful work of our 4th grade gardeners!
