These pictures are of the public dock beside the Winfield Community Center on the Kanawha River. It may be hard to notice at first, but if you zoom in you can see foot prints on the ice. (Some going all the way out to the chanel where the barges have broken through the ice.) We can not stress enough how dangerous this is!!! If/when you go through the ice, we will have a delayed response due to all of our river access points/boat ramps being frozen over as well. There is no easy way to get to you. With very low water temperatures and the current under the ice, a break through may very well be fatal. Parents, please talk to your children about the dangers of this type of situation. And this goes for everyone, PLEASE STAY OFF THE ICE!

We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the passing of Chuck Meadows, former WVFD Fire Chief and Board of Director’s member. Beginning in 1992, Chuck was a founding member of our sub-station when it was put into service in the north end of our fire district to better serve the Frazier’s Bottom community. He held many roles in the fire service, working his way up to the Fire Chiefs position which he held for 4 years. Though he took a break from the fire service for a while, he was ever present around the station and especially on MVC’s with his role with Hurricane Wrecker. He was always eager to lend a helping hand and pass on his vast knowledge of auto extraction. You could always count on the job getting done quickly and precisely when Chuck was around. In later years he came back to WVFD to serve on our Board of Directors, only stepping down in late 2025 due to illness. Chuck will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on through the many young firemen he impacted during his time in emergency services. Please keep his wife Judy and the rest of their family in your prayers for the days and months to come.

It has come to our attention that it is being circulated that our parade was rescheduled for this evening. We want to reiterate that we DO NOT have a parade scheduled for this evening. Our parade was scheduled for last weekend and had to be canceled due to weather. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. It appears a local news station had some bad information that may have led to this misunderstanding.

Attention: With the forecasted weather system moving in tomorrow evening and the possibility of dangerous road conditions, we have made the tough decision to cancel this year’s Christmas Parade out of an abundance of caution. We appreciate everyone who has reached out to participate and hope that you can join us again next year. We held off as long as we could, and understand that the models are constantly evolving, however we wanted to make the decision early enough that everyone could plan accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for continuing to support us at WVFD. Merry Christmas Everyone!
