September is National Preparedness Month!

Preparedness doesn’t mean living in fear or expecting the worst. It means taking a few simple steps now, so you’re better equipped when the unexpected happens.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Start small: sign up for emergency alerts, talk with your family about where you would go, or add a few extra supplies to your emergency kit.

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.

As a reminder, during the months of July through October, outdoor warning sirens are only tested on the first Tuesday of each month, weather permitting. Our next testing date is planned for August 4, 2026, at 11AM.

Outdoor warning sirens are intended to alert people who are outdoors of tornado warnings and should not be your only method of receiving emergency notifications. Be sure to have multiple ways to receive notifications, including Cowley Alerts, a NOAA Weather Radio, and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) enabled on your mobile device.

Cowley County uses Cowley Alerts, a mass notification system, to disseminate emergency messages to the public.
