Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation's history.
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Libraries play an important role in preserving history, promoting lifelong learning, and providing access to diverse voices and experiences. We invite you to explore books, films, and resources that highlight Black history, culture, and achievements.
Happy Juneteenth from all of us at the Winfield Public Library. Please check out the online historical databases for more information on Juneteenth at https://www.winfield.lib.il.us/winfield/research.html
