For those of you who read your monthly issue of Cooperative Living via the hard copy that you receive in the mail, as opposed to reading online, we apologize for the production error that has jumbled a few pages in the print version. You may have noticed a story about squirrels and power lines that seems to start in the middle of the article – because it does. Due to the error, only the second half of the story made it into print. You can read the complete story on Cooperative Living’s website now, at the link that follows, and we’ll have the full article in the July print issue of the magazine too. Some of the printing on the page 16 hurricane preparedness article also had some quality issues affecting the hues. Have you looked lately at the Home Energy Calculator on our website? It's a great tool to get a handle on your energy consumption and to identify ways to conserve before the real heat of summer descends upon us. An article we've just published on our website (link below) references the calculator and other resources that can help you boost your energy efficiency and save money on air conditioning as the temperatures climb. We encourage you to take a look. The savings add up, especially when conservation measures are implemented widely throughout our cooperative.

Given the heating bill spikes that accompanied our bone-chilling winter, it’s little solace that The Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting temperatures hotter than average along the East Coast this July and August. Cold or hot, when it’s on the extremes it causes higher electric bills.

You've got things to do, and it would help to save energy while you're busy doing them. So here are some quick tips on curbing your A/C use: Set thermostats to 78 degrees in the summer (or at least close to it); run ceiling fan paddles on medium, blowing down; change your HVAC filters regularly; make sure the filters are facing the correct direction when you install them; keep windows locked to seal better; caulk along baseboards with a clear sealant; insulate your attic access door; close shades and drapes during the day to keep heat out; ensure windows and doors are properly weather-stripped.

The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1) is right around the corner. Which means, of course, that it is time to get some weather preparedness measures done, or at least to review them if you've done them in the past. The National Weather Service's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has some great info on preparing a hurricane emergency plan and kit. Steps like evacuation routes, backup power generators, insurance policies and more. Plan ahead, and take the steps that will keep you, your family members and pets safe. Did you know that May is National Mental Health Awareness Month? The nonprofit Mental Health America organization reports that nearly one in five American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year.
