For those wondering how to potentially combat the spotted lanternfly, (beyond squishing them), plant milkweed! ๐Ÿฆ‹

Check out Nat Geo's article for the early research findings: https://on.natgeo.com/3nELdX

Spotted lanternflies first appeared in the United States in 2014 and have continued to spread in the 12 years since. The invasive species, now found across 19 states, feeds on plant sap, harms trees, and threatens the grape and w**e industry as well as many other crops. While experimenting with ways to fight back against the insects, scientists have discovered a promising new weapon: milkweed. https://on.natgeo.com/3nELdX

Mark your calendars - September 20th will be The Connecticut Valley To***co Historical Society's next Farm Tour! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฅพ

We are planning another farm tour September 20, 2026.
Please note we listened to the feedback and this year we have a more comfortable bus for everyone.
The farm tour will start at the Museum at 135 Lang Road then proceed by bus to a to***co farm where there will be a demonstration to the curing process of to***co.
This will be followed by a trip back to the museum for a tour of the museum, a great barbecue and fellowship.
Please call me at 860-836-0285 or Email at [email protected] with any questions.
Attached is the flyer for the to***co farm tour.

The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a non-native species that feeds on over 70 types of plants, including economically important crops and trees. It uses piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from stems, branches, and trunks, which can weaken plants and reduce vigor. In MA and CT, grapevines, apple trees, and hops are among the most vulnerable crops, with grapevines at particular risk of significant damage or death after heavy feeding in a single season.

As the insect feeds, it excretes a sugary substance known as 'honeydew'. This honeydew accumulates on leaves, branches, and surfaces below infested plants. The presence of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a black fungal coating that can interfere with photosynthesis when it covers leaf surfaces. While most established trees can survive feeding, the combination of honeydew and sooty mold can lead to health issues, especially in high populations.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) encourages public reporting and extermination to aid in monitoring its range and reducing spread.
