Attended the Open House for the Temple Grandin Equine Center today. Such an inspiring place for Equine assisted activities and therapy. This is a place where people with physical, emotional and developmental challenges can heal, where therapists can treat, where students can learn and where scientists can research. Dr. Anne Comi, the director of our Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center, recently received notice that she and Dr. Jonathan Pevsner will receive five additional years of funding from the Brain Vascular Malformation Consortium (BVMC).

The NIH-funded BVMC is a collection of academic medical centers, patient support groups and clinical research resources that are dedicated to conducting clinical research on different forms of brain vascular formations, including Sturge-Weber syndrome. Kennedy Krieger is the lead clinical site for Sturge-Weber Syndrome projects, with Dr. Comi serving as the principal investigator.

This grant will allow researchers to conduct studies to better understand the clinical issues in Sturge-Weber syndrome and develop new tools to monitor and treat the brain, skin and eye conditions associated with it. After my run yesterday, Paul Holstein kindly picked me up and drove me back to my car. I then drove to Manchester and stayed there for the night. And if everything goes according to plan, the area where my motel is located is where I will end my run today.

We are headed to Baltimore to be recognized for the foundation's funding of the Hunter Nelson Sturge Weber Center. This spring our research center discovered the cause of the disease that took our son Hunter's life when he was five years old. The New England Journal of Medicine called this finding a "Game Changing & Monumental Medical Breakthrough!!! Now a cure is in sight!!!
