September 12th, 2026, is recognized as National Women’s Police Day. Today we recognize the women of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office for their courage, service, and contributions to the citizens of Bertie County.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a su***de that occurred in the 300 block of Green Cross Road, Windsor.

9/11/2026, Bertie County Communications received a 911 call at 8:29 PM about a suicidal person. An EMS employee was the first on scene and found the victim unresponsive. Upon the arrival of additional EMS personnel and law enforcement, they identified Johnny Thomas (54) of Windsor, deceased from a gunshot wound.

Thomas was a defendant in a s*x crime against a child/children case that began in 2021, and his trial was scheduled for 9/28/2026.

In 2021, the Bertie County Sheriff's Office received a report of a s*x crime, and Thomas was the alleged perpetrator. The 2021 investigation resulted in Thomas being arrested and charged with 21 total s*x crime charges on 03/21/2022. After the initial charges against Thomas, more victims came forward, reporting that they were victims of s*x offenses and identified Thomas as the perpetrator.

After more victims came forward, Investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office conducted numerous interviews and obtained more charges against Thomas. Investigators arrested Thomas again on April 3rd, 2023. Thomas was released again after he satisfied his bond.

All the victims in the Johnny Thomas case have been notified of this incident tonight, and the next of kin have been notified.

Update
The Bertie County Sheriff's Office is in the early stages of a homicide investigation that occurred on September 9, 2026.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office received the initial call at 3:51 pm of a person lying on the ground, not breathing, in the area of Nowell Farm Road near Meadow Road in Colerain. The first Deputy arrived at 4:03 PM and found a male deceased from gunshot wounds.

The victim has been identified as Quadarius Holloman (19) of Edenton. Next of kin has been notified.

Investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the NCSBI, have been conducting interviews and following up on leads. The Bertie County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone who has seen or heard anything contact the Bertie County Sheriff's Office.

We are aware of a picture of the deceased being shared on social media. We encourage anyone who’s sharing the photo to stop because your property could be seized as evidence.

A homicide investigation has begun here in Bertie County on Nowell Farm Road near Meadow Road in Colerain. There is no information to release to the public at this time as investigators begin interviews to determine what happened.

Highway is back open

Highway 13/17 bridge going into Williamston is closed due to an 18-wheeler accident. We have been notified that it may be 3 hours before the roadway will be back open. Our Office will get an update and notify the citizens.

Citizens of Bertie County
This Friday September 11th, we will be having a ceremony in remembrance of the day that our Country will never forget 9/11. The ceremony will be at the Bertie County Courthouse from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. It is open to the public and we would love for you to attend.
