The Navajo Nation is located in the southwest area of the United States and within the Navajo Nation are four states: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. The Navajo Nation is roughly over 27,000 square miles and the Navajo Police Department is responsible for providing police services to this area. The Navajo Police Department is under the Navajo Division of Public Safety and as a whole, is comprised of seven (7) Police Districts. Those Police Districts are Window Rock, Shiprock, Crownpoint, Tuba City, Chinle, Kayenta, and Dilkon. Emergency Contact Numbers:

Today, June 19, 2026, we proudly recognize Sergeant Darrell Sombrero Sr. on his retirement after 37.7 years of dedicated service with the Navajo Nation Police Department.

Throughout his distinguished career, Sergeant Sombrero faithfully served the communities of Tuba City and the surrounding areas with professionalism, integrity, and a strong commitment to public safety. He answered countless calls for service, mentored fellow officers, served on the Strategic Reaction Team (SRT), and helped strengthen community relationships through events such as Law Day.

Known as a dependable officer, respected leader, and dedicated public servant, Sergeant Sombrero leaves behind a lasting legacy through the officers he mentored and the many lives he touched throughout his career.

Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Darrell Sombrero Sr. on a well-earned retirement and thanking him for nearly 38 years of honorable service to the Navajo Nation and its people.

Navajo Police Department Saturation Patrol

The Navajo Police Department is increasing its proactive law enforcement presence throughout designated communities across the Navajo Nation.

Beginning June 15, 2026, through June 26, 2026, officers will conduct focused saturation patrols and proactive enforcement operations aimed at improving public safety, deterring criminal activity, and addressing violations of laws.

During this initiative, officers will maintain a visible presence throughout the community, conduct traffic enforcement, respond to calls for service, and actively engage with residents, community leaders, and public officials. The Navajo Police Department remains committed to treating all community members with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.

This effort is part of the Department's ongoing commitment to proactive policing and enhancing the safety and quality of life for all residents of the Navajo Nation. Increased patrol presence is intended to deter criminal activity, improve community trust, and ensure laws are enforced fairly and consistently.

The Navajo Police Department encourages community members to report suspicious activity and continue partnering with law enforcement to help keep our communities safe.

Together, we can build safer and stronger communities across the Navajo Nation.

The Navajo Police Department proudly announces the promotion of Sergeant Crystal Thinn to the rank of Police Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Thinn has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication throughout her law enforcement career. Her commitment to serving and protecting the Navajo Nation, mentoring fellow officers, and upholding the values of the department has earned her this well-deserved promotion.

As a Police Lieutenant, she will oversee the Navajo Police Training Academy. Lieutenant Thinn will collaborate with multiple agencies and departments to have a successful academy.

Chief Silversmith, Deputy Chief Leonard Williams and Deputy Chief Donnie Kee were in attendance to congratulate Thinn, gave words of encourage and the value of what challenges may come with upholding a leadership position.

Chief Silversmith stated, “Congratulations, Lieutenant Thinn, on your well-deserved promotion. Throughout your career, you have demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and dedication to the Navajo Police Department and the communities we serve. As you assume this new role, there will be increased responsibilities, expectations, and challenges, but I am confident in your ability to meet them with integrity and commitment.” Chief Silversmith added, “Thank you for your service and for your willingness to accept this important responsibility. I also extend my gratitude to your family for their continued support and dedication throughout your law enforcement career.”

Crystal Thinn stated, “As I accept the honor of serving as a Police Lieutenant with the Navajo Police Department, I am committed to building upon the leadership of those who came before me. I will work to blend Diné values and teachings with modern policing practices to strengthen leadership, training, and service to our communities. My goal is to help develop future leaders who serve the Navajo Nation with integrity, respect, accountability, and cultural pride. Ahéhee’ dóó baa’ahánisin.”

June 8, 2026, The Navajo Police Department honors the life of Esther Todacheene.

On June 8, 1998, Police Officer Esther Todacheene was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to assist another officer.

During the response, her vehicle rolled over several times, ejecting her.

Officer Todacheene had served with the Navajo Division of Public Safety for one year and was assigned to the Kayenta District. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

The Navajo Police will honor the legacy and life of Police Officer Esther Todacheene. Thank you to all first responders for taking an important role to answering the calls of service to the people.
