North Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue

North Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue The House On The Hill Company meetings were held at the lodge and the Mountain Falls Community Center until the original station was completed in June of 1974.

The first organizational meeting of North Mountain was held on February 25, 1973 when 100 members of the community came together at the old Shawneeland Lodge. At that time, the membership of North Mountain was around 200 people and each member was required to pay $3 in annual membership dues. North Mountain's original company number was #9
Our station is located at the base of Great North Mountain

in the western portion of Frederick County VA. The land our building sits on was donated by Thomas Rosenberger, a local farmer and former Fire Chief. Our building is still the same with the exception of some more apparatus bays and a large banquet hall. North Mountain operated a first responder program until 1989 when the first ambulance was purchased. North Mountain was one of the first transporting agencies in Frederick County. Our company now averages 550 calls per year and maintains 8 pieces of equipment. Our company operates with 35 operational members and several administrative members. Two career staff employed by the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department work at our station on 3 separate 24 hour shifts. A Tanker was purchased in 2015 after the sale of our reserve Engine, bringing a much needed service back to the residents of our first due area as well as Frederick County. In 2016, an extensive building renovation took place adding new living space, 2 new bunk rooms that can accommodate a total of 14 members and career staff. We also added a new office as well as new bay doors, new gear stalls and painted the entire interior of the Fire Station. A contract was signed with 4-Guys Fire Apparatus in May of 2020 for the purchase of a new Spartan custom pumper. The apparatus is currently in the building process and is due to be delivered during Summer 2021. The new pumper was placed into service in November 2021. The old Wagon 19 was sold to Frederick County Fire and Rescue to be used as a reserve/training engine. Company 19 Fire Chiefs:

🚫 Public Notice: Burn Ban in Effect ❗❗️❗️

Due to the increased risk for wildfires due to the current extreme atmospheric and drought conditions, Frederick County will be under an open air burn ban effective
Thursday, April 16th, 2026, until further notice.

No person shall kindle or maintain or authorize to be kindled or maintain any open burning during this time. This prohibition includes all bonfires, ceremonial fires, camping fires, barrel fires, etc. This regulation does not include barbecue grills, smokers, or any device that emits smoke through a chimney or stack.

This action is being instituted in accordance with Chapter 45 Article II section 45-10 E of the Frederick County code on the recommendation of Frederick County Fire Rescue System Fire Marshal and Fire Chief by the County Administrator.
The Frederick County Fire and Rescue System - Office of the Fire Marshal will continue to monitor these adverse conditions daily and make recommendations to the County Administrator and the Board of Supervisors on when to lift or amend the burn ban.

Violations and Penalty – Violations of the open burning regulations may result in being charged with and convicted of a Class 1 Misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of a fine up to $2,500.00 and up to a year in jail. Further, if convicted, the responsible party may be held liable for all damages and the costs of firefighting operations.

Safety tips during this dry period to reduce the chances of fire include:
•Do not discard ci******es by throwing them down, use ashtrays or water to make sure they are out before disposing. Discarded ci******es do cause fires and can be disastrous in times of drought and high fire risk.
•When pulling off the side of the road, stay off dry grass areas. Park vehicles so that the exhaust does not contact dry grass, leaves or weeds.
•During this time, do not burn household trash in barrels.
•If you cook outdoors, never leave barbeque grills or smokers unattended. Place your grill or smoker on concrete or your driveway away from combustible materials. If using charcoal or wood, make sure that the fire has been extinguished by soaking it with a garden hose before disposing of the coals.
•Move anything that will burn far away from structures, items like firewood, compost piles, brush piles, etc.

Spring fire season in Virginia officially starts today. Don’t let the remaining snow on the ground fool you as we’re still under significant drought conditions in our area. The 4PM burn laws are in effect today and will remain in effect through April 30

Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. 🔥🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
🔥 Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
🔥 If you must burn, avoid windy days
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Know the state burn law and local restrictions

Get more tips, and learn about the 4 p.m. burning law on DOF’s website: https://ow.ly/3SsV50Yey8q

Our area is expecting yet another round strong winds accompanied of frigid temperatures beginning overnight and through tomorrow. We could see gusts up to 60mph and temperatures well into the negatives 🥶. As usual, the biggest threat for our area is downed trees and power lines.

A strong Arctic front will bring strong/damaging winds to the area late tonight through Saturday. The strongest surge of wind around daybreak Saturday through mid-Saturday afternoon. Gusts of 45-60 mph are expected across most of the region with locally higher gusts. Plan for instances of wind damage and power outages. More at weather.gov/lwx.
