June is Pride Month — a time to recognize the strength that comes from embracing what makes each of us unique. At NW Works, we are committed to fostering a workplace and community where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

Our mission is rooted in empowering people of all abilities and backgrounds to secure meaningful employment and maximize independence. This month, we reflect on the importance of inclusion, celebrating individuality, and taking pride in who we are.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Staff and team members at NW Works enjoyed a cookout today as we prepare for summer! We picked the perfect day to do it with beautiful weather, and no rain in sight— other than some light drizzles from our water games! Our annual cookout provides a change in pace for our team and an opportunity to come together and enjoy good food, interactive games, and good company. We even had some music therapy outside thanks to music therapists Allison and Farren. Thanks to our team for their help with event preparation, cooking and serving! Enjoy some pictures of our annual cookout!

In recognition of Memorial Day, NW Works will be closed Monday (5/25/26). On Monday, we will remember and honor the service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our thoughts are with the families of fallen service members, and we extend our gratitude to current service members, along with past and fallen veterans. NW Works will reopen on Tuesday, May 26th.

On this Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we're excited to share a resource available to visitors at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley! Check this out, and head over to the MSV like so many team members at NW Works enjoy doing as part of our community outings!

Everyone experiences museums differently, and we’re thrilled to announce that new sensory backpacks are now available at the MSV.

As part of our commitment to creating a welcoming environment with meaningful experiences accessible to all, these backpacks are designed to support a more comfortable visit. Each includes items to help reduce overstimulation—such as noise-canceling headphones and fidget tools—as well as supplies that encourage hands-on exploration of MSV spaces, including a nature sketchbook and magnifying glass.

Sensory backpacks may be borrowed at no cost during your MSV visit from the Guest Services Desk in the galleries building lobby or from the Gate House at the garden entrance. These kits were made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Learn more about accessibility at the MSV here: themsv.org/accessibility

Whether you need sensory support for yourself, a child, or a loved one, you belong at the MSV.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day! While GAAD often focuses on digital access, accessibility is much broader, focusing on creating environments where every person has the tools and support they need to thrive. At NW Works, we believe accessibility, both physical and digital, is essential to building a more inclusive world.

Through NW Works' partnership with Plato's Closet, we're reminded that accessibility isn't a special accommodation, but rather good management. From day one, Kelley, her job coach Caitlin, and the Plato's Closet Team worked together to build training strategies that matched Kelly's learning style. When tasks felt challenging, Kelly's response never wavered: "I'll get the hang of it". And she did.

Kelly's story shows what accessibility looks like in practice: collaboration, communication, and a workplace committed to meeting people where they are. Accessibility not only benefitted Kelly and NW Works, but also Plato's Closet, their team, and their loyal customers.

As we empower adults with disabilities to gain skills and secure meaningful employment, we’re also challenging ourselves and our community to make accessibility a priority. That can mean captioning videos, adding alt text to images, or simply reflecting on how your business can be more inclusive.
