The Flats of Winchester, MA

The Flats of Winchester, MA The area known as “the Flats” is recognized as one of Boston’s first planned suburban developments.

The land here is truly “flat” and allowed developers in the 1890’s to lay the streets out on a grid, not found in other areas of town. Impressive examples of Late Victorian architecture prevail in this neighborhood, including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Tudor. Lots sizes are generally uniform in shape and range from approximately 8,000 to 18,000 square feet. Residents enjoy the wide sidewalk

s and strong neighborhood spirit in the Flats. The neighborhood was developed in the 1890s, carved from a parcel of land known as "The Flats," between Wi******er's hills and the Aberjona River. According to local historian Ellen Knight, in the 1910s the local newspaper touted the area as the ideal commuter suburb of Boston, a short 15-minute train ride to the southeast. The architecture is diverse — Tudors, Shingle Styles, center-hall Colonials, and bungalows. Nearby amenities: Borggaard Beach, FAN Splash Park, Town Clay Tennis Courts, Wichester Center and Commuter rail station, Route 3 retail and Winter Ponds.
