NASHVILLE – Beginning October 15, a free burn permit from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) is required prior to burning leaves or natural vegetation, including debris generated by Hurricane Helene.

“Due to the vast amount of woody debris from Hurricane Helene and other recent storms across the state, we expect more outdoor burning than usual this year,” State Forester Heather Slayton said. “Since escaped debris burns are the leading cause of wildfires, it is important that Tennesseans take fire safety seriously. Burn permits are required by law and the tool by which we help citizens understand when and how to burn.”

Be weather alert , strong winds

STRONG WINDS ON THE WAY: An incoming low pressure system will bring strong winds to Middle Tennessee starting this afternoon. Gusts will really ramp up tonight, though, and last into the overnight hours. Gusts between 45-50 mph are likely with a few spots possibly seeing 55-60 mph late tonight. A wind advisory goes into effect at 1pm today and will last through 7am Tuesday.

ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONERN: Even though rain is on the way, it's not here yet, and it's very dry out there right now. That coupled with strong winds means there is elevated fire weather concern today. Burning is not advised.

STORMS: There could be a rumble or two of thunder tonight, but outside of the winds, we are not expecting severe weather. Don't let that fool you into thinking the winds won't be of much concern, though. That IS the primary hazard with this weather system, so remain weather aware! Rain will move in tonight and totals vary anywhere from a half-inch to 1.5 inches.

CALL TO ACTION: If you haven't already, secure any loose outdoor items NOW before the winds get any stronger.

The marginal risk of severe storms (1 out of 5) has been expanded to include all of Middle Tennessee. The primary threat will be damaging straight-line winds. There is a lower threat of large hail and isolated tornadoes, mainly for areas west of I-65. Storms are expected to move through the mid state beginning during the evening and lasting into the overnight hours.
