On June 1, 1792, Kentucky officially became the 15th state admitted to the United States and the first state west of the Appalachian Mountains. More than two centuries later, the Commonwealth’s story is still being told through the communities, people, traditions, and places that make Kentucky unlike anywhere else.
Here in Wi******er-Clark County, Kentucky, our chapter of that story is filled with originality. Clark County was created in 1792 from portions of Bourbon and Fayette counties, during the same historic year Kentucky became a state, and was formally formed in 1793. That connection gives Wi******er-Clark County a meaningful place in the Commonwealth’s earliest story, not as a footnote, but as part of Kentucky’s foundation.
Our community has continued to leave its mark through history, music, sports, journalism, food, craftsmanship, and culture. From sculptor Joel Tanner Hart and White House correspondent Helen Thomas, to bluegrass instrument maker Homer Ledford, actor Matt Long, athlete Yeremiah Bell, Athlete Matt Giner, Poet and essayist Allen Tate and so many others with ties to Wi******er-Clark County, this place has always produced people with something to say, something to make, and something to share.
That same spirit can still be found today in our historic downtown, local shops, restaurants, trails, festivals, the Official Birthplace of Beer Cheese, and the hometown of Ale-8-One. Kentucky’s story is big, bold, flavorful, creative, and full of character, and you can experience so much of it right here in Wi******er-Clark County.
