Frederick County Public Schools Social Media Terms and Conditions

The purpose of the Frederick County Public Schools (“FCPS”) official social media platforms is to provide information about our schools and public education generally in a timely and efficient manner. The following social media terms and conditions apply to any official FCPS social media page, including official social media pages

of any of its schools. For all posts made on and after September 20, 2024: Beginning September 20, 2024, FCPS official social media platforms will no longer allow commenting on posts. In the event a post inadvertently allows comments, once staff is aware the commenting capability will be removed as well as any comments that are made on the post. For any comments made on posts that were posted before September 20, 2024: In the event that comments are made to posts that were posted prior to September 20, 2024, those comments will be reviewed and removed, if necessary, pursuant to the below terms. Please note that official FCPS social media pages may not be regularly monitored and FCPS encourages anyone with specific questions or concerns involving a school matter to contact their school principal or the Director of Media and Communications (“Director”). Public comments expressed on FCPS social media pages do not reflect the opinions and position of the Frederick County School Board, FCPS, and its schools, officers and employees. Comment Removal
Recognizing that students use and access official FCPS social media platforms, FCPS expects those who engage with FCPS social media platforms to serve as role models to students and engage in civil, appropriate commentary. As a result, FCPS reserves the right to remove comments made on FCPS posts that contain:

-Conduct that violates the terms and conditions of the applicable social media platform (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
-Illegal conduct or encouragement of illegal activity
-Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates prohibited discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation
-Conduct that is threatening, inciting, harassing, or bullying
-Content that is unrelated to the original FCPS post
-Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party, such as copyright or trademark infringement
-Information that is false
-Content that compromises the safety or security of FCPS, any of its schools, staff, or students
-Personnel information, individually identifiable student information, or other confidential material
-Profane language or content
-Promotions of services or products
-Promotions of political candidates or organizations
-Sexual harassment or sexual content
-Solicitations of commerce or advertisements including promotion or endorsement
-Spam or comments that include links to external online sites
-Conduct that is otherwise in violation of School Board policies or that reasonably may lead to the substantial disruption of or material interference with FCPS school operations

Comments in violation of these terms and conditions may be removed from the applicable FCPS official social media platform. Continued or egregious violations may prompt FCPS to further restrict an individual’s commenting on official FCPS social media platforms. FCPS will not remove content simply because it disagrees with the user’s viewpoint or the user criticizes FCPS. Comment Removal Procedure
The FCPS social media platforms are administered by designated staff. When designated staff suspect a violation of these terms and conditions, the Director will be notified and will review and authorize removal of a comment when appropriate. Upon finding a violation, the Director will make a reasonable effort to contact the individual commenter to give notice of the violation and the removal of their commentary. Appeals regarding the Director’s decision to remove a comment or to take further action for repeated violations of these terms and conditions may be submitted via e-mail to the Assistant Superintendent for Administration within two calendar days. Notices
Individuals should be aware that their comments may be subject to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and records retention requirements. FCPS may be obligated to retain public comments in its records and/or disclose the information if requested. Official FCPS Social Media Pages include, but are not limited to, those pages identified on the FCPS website.

Select students from Mrs. Lancaster’s AP English 11 classes presented their “Reimaging the Student Experience” research projects to members of the central office staff on Tuesday, May 26. Administrators from the buildings and grounds, finance, and instructional departments, among others, learned the student perspective on the use of technology and testing in schools and heard suggestions for adding more project-based learning and outdoor learning spaces. Other projects proposed changes to school schedules and curriculum for student-paced learning and added internship opportunities. This allowed students to showcase their research, literacy, and public speaking skills in an authentic setting where their ideas might not make a difference for their education, but might influence the education of their younger peers.

Yesterday in Ms. Holmes and Mrs. Davis’ Competitive Team Sports class, several students were recognized for their outstanding performance throughout this semester’s units, as well as for overall MVP, Sportsmanship, "Sleeper Pick" and Coach of the Year honors. Students received a certificate, a mini trophy, and an ice pop to celebrate their achievements. We are incredibly grateful for these students and the leadership, enthusiasm, and positive attitudes they demonstrated throughout the semester.

Creative Writing Club is excited to celebrate Miley Hanna’s Third Place at VHSL’s Creative Writing Contest! The other writers contributing to the team’s eight place finish (out of 38 schools entering) were Jeter Rivera, Pauline Pham, Mabel Sytron, Nel Kulp, and Julian Fost.

Short Story: Miley Hanna, Superior: “What a fantastic short story! You’ve done a superb job combining the modern world with high fantasy in a way that feels realistic and authentic. I am so invested in this world you’ve created. I can’t wait to see what else you do with it. Keep writing!”

Mabel Styron, Superior: “In just four pages, ‘Luminary Heretic’ accomplishes a lot. The reader gets fantastic character work, a sense of the world, and important social commentary on how stifling societal expectations around gender conformity can be for those who don’t fall into their expected place.”

Poetry: Jeter Rivera, Excellent: “This poem is a vibrant and assertive celebration of cultural identity, voice, and resilience, using rich imagery and rhythm to confront misunderstanding and dismissal. From the opening lines, the speaker establishes a strong emotional core and that tension carries effectively throughout the piece.”

Pauline Pham, Excellent: “This is a deeply moving multi-part poem that explores difficult topics with remarkable depth and control. The structure allows the reader to experience the speaker’s journey as something unfolding, layered, and intentional. Overall, this is a thoughtfully crafted and emotionally resonant poem that balances vulnerability with strength. Its layered structure, vivid imagery, and thematic cohesion make it a compelling and memorable work, demonstrating both technical skill and a powerful, authentic voice.”

Creative Nonfiction: Nel Kulp, Excellent: “I enjoyed your use of the dream imagery of the minecart as a metaphor for life. I found the metaphor to be both fresh and coherent, which can be challenging to accomplish. I found your exploration of identity, fear of the unknown, and the experience of feeling “in-between” very insightful.”

Julian Fost, Good: The use of language in this essay felt polished. I enjoyed the narrative voice. I also found the star imagery throughout the essay intriguing. I found the conclusion particularly compelling and satisfying.”
