The "heart" of our light, is a First Order Fresnel, made in 1890 from Barbier & Cie, Paris, France. It has 616 handcut prisms, with 24 bulls-eyes, with 8 covered with molten red glass panes. It weighs 2 Tons, and is 9' 2" tall x 6' 4: in diameter. Its 2,250,000+ candlepower is visible for 20 miles out to sea. It is one of two operating in the world, and the only lens you can enter from beneath. The Umpqua River Light is known for its distinct red and white signature.

Today, August 7th, we celebrate National Lighthouse Day, a day to honor and pay tribute to our nation's rich lighthouse history, and to the men and women who worked and sacrificed in all weather conditions and at times gave their own lives so that others could be saved.

Our light was first lit on December 31, 1894 at 4:34pm, by M. Stream, Lightkeeper, and today is 121 years old. Thanks to an incredible partnership with U.S. Coast Guard, federal legislators, local and state support, we reached a historic lease agreement to save our First Order Fresnel Lens from being dismantled, and to continue preservation, protection and maintenance of our iconic beacon.

Come and SEA our lighthouse ... take a tour to the top of the light, and browse the lighthouse museum to learn about the cultural heritage and rich maritime history of Wi******er Bay. And if you can't visit our lighthouse today, be sure to visit a lighthouse in your region and experience what makes these historic landmarks such a special part of our nation's history.

It's always a very sad day when a lighthouse goes dark, and we are especially sorry to see the beautiful little lighthouse and beacon at Cape Mears, Oregon decommissioned.

CAPE MEARES, Ore. - One hundred and twenty-four years after the U.S. government illuminated the Cape Meares Lighthouse, the U.S. Coast Guard permanently removed an automated beacon at Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, leaving the headland in the dark for the first time in modern history. Come & SEA Us!
Spring Break & Whale Watch at Umpqua River Light

Beginning today, the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum is open daily from 10am-3:30pm through March 30th for Spring Break and the Annual Whale Watch migration.

Bring your family and friends out to learn all about the Gray Whale migration along the Oregon Coast. Volunteers will be at the Spyhoppers Whale Watch Observation Platform directly in front of the lighthouse, one of 24 specialized “Whale Watching Spoken Here” sites in Oregon and very proud to be selected as the #1 Spot for whale watching by The Oregonian newspaper, who cites that last Spring 494 whales were counted passing by and we had a total of 513 visitors during Spring break.

While you’re here, be sure to visit the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum, with some beautiful exhibits and displays honoring our cultural heritage and maritime history. And sign up for a tour of our beautiful lighthouse!

The Museum is located at 1020 Lighthouse Road in Wi******er Bay. Parking at the museum is free. Admission to the museum is free. Guided Lighthouse Tours are $5 for Adults, $3 for Seniors & Students; Children age 3-5 are free. Sign up for Lighthouse Tours at the Museum, and be sure to visit the museum Gift Store for March Madness Specials. For more information: call (541)271-4631

Whale Watching Week is March 22-29, and our thanks to The Oregonian newspaper for picking Umpqua River Lighthouse as the #1 spot to Whale Watch on the Oregon Coast! We agree .... but if you can't make it here to see us and the whales, please find a location close to you and don't miss the annual migration!

Spring Whale Watching Week is fast approaching, March 22 to March 29, but how do you know where to go to see the migrating whales? Using the Oregon State Parks data on whales and visitors from last year's migration, I've calculated the top 10 places to go whale watching on the coast.
