Get ready for a relaxing journey as you float down the beautiful Tippecanoe River from Tippecanoe River State Park. Bring your own canoe or make arrangements with the local canoe livery. When you return, you can enjoy the beautiful campground facilities with your group, family or friends within this Indiana State Park in Winamac. There are a variety of camping opportunities that include primitive,

electric, camper cabins, horse sites, and youth tent areas. Tippecanoe also has several historic structures built by the Works Project Administration (WPA) in the 1930s. One of these structures is a 90-foot fire tower that offers visitors an outstanding view of the surrounding countryside. Another is Tepicon Recreation Hall, which is a popular location for weddings and family reunions.

Friday, Sept. 4
3:00pm Camp Craft: Meal Planning, Storage, & Disposal: Taking a big group on a camping adventure, over a long weekend? Do you know how much food to take, how to store it, where to put it when you’re done? For the answers to these questions and many more, come to the Nature Center. 1 hour.
6:00pm Gourmet S’mores: Welcome to the Park! Are you interested in the weekend’s activities? Do you have some general park questions? Come by and try a gourmet campfire treat while you find some answers!!! Community Fire Ring, 2 hours.

Saturday, Sept. 5
10:00am Mussel Mania: Do you Love the Tippecanoe River? Fresh water mussels do too!!! Come learn why Mussels are important to people and the river, AND what we can do to help them stay in the river for years to come. Meet the Naturalist in the Nature Center, 30 minutes.
1:00pm River Otters: Join the naturalist to find out more about these curious creatures. Join us on the Patio at the Nature Center, 30 minutes.
6:00pm Build Your Own: Decorative bird or butterfly houses. Pick a house, build it, then paint it to make it your very own! Kits are $5. Nature Center Patio, 1 hour.

Sunday, Sept. 6
1:00pm Leather Stamping Project: The Naturalist will provide directions and tips for you to create your own Leather Stamping Project for a $5 donation to our Friends Group. Nature Center Patio, 1 hour

Monday, Sept. 7
1:00pm Walking Stick Program: Learn how to create your own walking stick and how to use it in the wild!!! For a $5 donation to our Friends Group, the naturalist will provide directions and safety tips. We also want to thank the Winamac Fish and Wildlife Area for providing the sticks! Nature Center Patio, 1 hour

6:30pm Friends Group of Tippecanoe River State Park Meeting: Everyone is welcome!!! The Friends Group is a non-profit, volunteer group that supports the park! We do conservation activities, education, recreation, historic preservation, and promote the activities of the park. History Week, Day 6: Tippecanoe River State Park’s fire tower is another impressive structure built by WPA workers in the 1930s. In its early days, it served as a lookout for spotting fires across the surrounding countryside, especially during drought conditions.
Today, it’s open to the public — and for many visitors, a trip to Tippecanoe just isn’t complete without the hike to the top. The panoramic view of the surrounding countryside makes the climb worth every step!

Friday, Aug. 28
3:00pm Camp Craft “ Planning a Camping Trip”: Do you have a group you would like to take Camping, but you don’t know where to start? We will look at the size and age range of your group and help get you started on your big adventure!!! Bring a notebook and a pen to take notes. Nature Center Patio, 1 hour.

Saturday, Aug. 29
9:00am Bike Your Park: Meet the Naturalist at the Fire Tower Parking Lot to get the route to complete and the list of pictures to take. Then bike the park before it gets hot! When your tour is complete come back to the Nature Center to collect your prize.
1:00pm River Otters: Come to the Nature Center Patio and find out all the Naturalist knows about these fun and energetic little creatures. Nature Center Patio, 30 minutes
3:00pm Nature Center Scavenger Hunt: Get the list and search the Nature Center and the grounds close by. Take pictures of what you find! Bring your pictures back to the NC to claim your prize! Nature Center, 45 minutes.

History Week, Day 4: Tepicon Recreation Hall may be the finest structure built by WPA workers at Tippecanoe River State Park. Nearly unchanged since its construction, it still stands strong today and continues to be a favorite spot for weddings, family reunions, and all kinds of special events.

History Week, Day 3: Some of our guests still remember taking a dip in the old Group Camp Swimming Pool at Tippecanoe River State Park. I’ve been told the pool had so many leaks that fresh water was constantly being added — which meant the water stayed in the 50s even on the hottest summer days!
Eventually, the pool deteriorated to the point it could no longer be used and was removed in the 1990s. A chilly but cherished piece of park history!

Here’s What’s Happening at the Park!!!!

Friday, Aug 21
3:00pm Camp Craft Knots: Square Knot and Clove Hitch knots are very commonly used in campsites all over the world. Come learn these knots and when to use them. Nature Center Patio, 1 hour.
6:00pm Banana Boats: The Naturalist will introduce you to a fruity campfire delight and the scoop on the weekend’s activities. Community Fire Ring in Electric Camp, 1 hour 30 minutes.

Saturday, Aug. 22
5:00pm Fire Tetrahedron: Guest Naturalist Roger Miller comes with an explanation of what a fire tetrahedron is and why it’s so important to know how to use it! Nature Center Patio, 1 hour.

Sunday, Aug. 23
1:00pm Wood Burning Program: This short program followed by the opportunity to create your own Wood Burned Coaster Project for a $5 donation to our Friends Group. The Naturalist will provide directions and safety tips. Nature Center, 1 hour.

Recent rains have once again raised the Tippecanoe River to a level where we don’t recommend paddlers heading out. As of today, Aug. 16, the river is about 9 feet at the Winamac River Station.
For safety, we recommend waiting until the river level drops below 5 feet, and using extra caution when levels are between 5 and 6 feet.
You can check river levels anytime by visiting Weather.gov and clicking on “Rivers.”
Stay safe, and we’ll see you on the water when conditions improve!
