Limestone Link is lookin' good this week!

Located in San Marcos, TX, Limestone Link is a 1-mile trail that connects River Recharge Natural Area and Ringtail Ridge Natural Area along the San Marcos Greenbelt.

The trail is open daily from dawn-dusk for hiking and biking. Pets allowed on leash.

Please note that there are no restrooms or running water at this trail.

The Armadillo Trail is perfect for a quiet morning hike. As you explore the trail, you'll wind through oak-juniper woodlands that occasionally open up into some sunny stretches.

Difficulty: Easy
Length: 3-mile loop

Fawn season is here! White-tailed Deer mamas are currently having their babies. During this time, mother deer will intentionally leave their fawns alone in a safe space while they go off to forage.

Read on for some helpful tips on what to do if you discover a baby deer.

🚫 STOP. Most baby deer seen alone do not need help.

🏠 Mother deer will often leave their fawns alone for hours at a time, especially if they feel the spot is safe. Sometimes this spot is the forest. Sometimes this is your garden, work shed, or right next to the trash can near the Nature Center. Give resting fawns as much space as possible. Most likely, they will move within a day or two.

⚠️ When to help? On rare occasion, assistance may be required. Fawns that are excessively crying or bleating, covered in flies, or near a deceased adult deer may be in need of help. Call Texas Parks and Wildlife or a Wildlife Rehabilitator immediately if you have any concerns.

A list of wildlife rehabilitators by county can be found on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.

Jacob's Well (5/28/26)

💧 Water levels in Cypress Creek are slightly up after receiving several inches of rain over the last few weeks. Water clarity is greatly improved, however, water level and spring flow are still much lower than anticipated.

🚫 Swimming at Jacob's Well is still not permitted at this time.

☔ More rainfall is predicted for next week. This is a great time to install or make adjustments to your rainwater harvesting systems.

The photos you see here depict several karst features located in our Hays County Parks, Preserves, and Natural Areas.

Karst landscapes are areas where the limestone bedrock is highly soluble, meaning it dissolves in water. This dissolving bedrock leads to the formation of karst features such as sinkholes, caves, and springs. In central Texas, sinkholes and caves are critical for groundwater recharge of the Trinity Aquifer.

More water in the Trinity Aquifer means more flow from springs like Jacob's Well (photo 3).

Both the Gay Ruby Dahlstrom Nature Preserve (photos 1 & 4) and Karst Canyon Preserve (photo 3) contain numerous karst features. At Karst Canyon Preserve, over one hundred features have been identified, including the Wimberley Bat Cave (photo 3). These preserves were acquired, in part, to protect the quantity and quality of groundwater recharge to the Trinity and Edward's Aquifers.

💦 Do you want to learn more about rainwater harvesting?

Join Hays County Park staff on a walk around Jacob's Well Natural Area to see several of our rainwater harvesting systems at work.

During the walk, park staff will discuss the basic components of a rainwater harvesting system, benefits of harvesting rainwater, and provide resources for setting up your own rainwater harvesting system.

Homeowner or renter, everyone is welcome! This event is free. No registration needed.

Memorial Day Weekend Updates: All Parks, Preserves, and Natural Areas will be operating under their regular open hours this weekend and on Monday, May 25th.

Please note that swimming is not permitted at Jacob's Well Natural Area at this time.

Jacob's Well Nature Center Open Hours:
Saturday, 11am-3pm
Sunday, 10am-3pm
Monday, 10am-3pm
