Sulfur inhibits strawberry powdery mildew, but many growers avoid using it because of its purported phytotoxicity under conditions defined as β€œhot.” Onofre et al. set out to determine phytotoxicity of sulfur on strawberry cultivates treated in controlled environments at different temperatures and time periods. Their results suggest that sulfur has benefits that greatly surpass minimal phytotoxicity observed. https://apsjournals.apsnet.org/doi/10.1094/PHP-04-20-0034-RS

Dr. Natalia Peres and her staff would like to congratulate Dr. Jim Mertely, UF-GCREC Plant Diagnostic and Research Coordinator, on his recent retirement. We appreciate his 22 years of service to the university and to our local growers. His wisdom and expertise in the strawberry research will surely be missed. He had also been a great mentor for our students and interns. Jim plans to do some hiking and fishing in and around the country. Enjoy the retirement life, Jim!
