Today, we did something a little old-fashioned to welcome something very new.

Wilton Ambulance Service officially welcomed our new 2026 ambulance with a traditional apparatus push-in ceremony.

The tradition reaches back to the days of hand-drawn and horse-drawn emergency apparatus, when crews would return from a call, unhitch their equipment and manually maneuver it back into the station. Over time, what began as necessity became ceremony.

It is a tradition that feels particularly appropriate for an ambulance. EMS has its own history of horse-drawn ambulances, followed by generations of vehicles that evolved from simple transportation into the mobile emergency medical units we work from today.

So today, our crew put their hands on it and pushed it into its new home together, symbolically wishing safe travels for the crews who will serve aboard it and for every patient it will carry.

May it carry our crews safely, serve our communities faithfully, and always bring us home.

Our 2014 ambulance is preparing to retire from our service, and while the new truck is beautiful, there is something about an old rig that is difficult to let go.

For more than a decade, this ambulance has been present for moments most people will never see. Babies have taken their first breaths inside it. Others have taken their last. It has carried patients through fear, pain, relief, heartbreak, and hope, often on the most difficult days of their lives.

It has also carried generations of EMS providers.

Inside those walls, seasoned clinicians taught younger providers how to care for patients, how to stay calm, and how to keep moving when a call followed them home. Skills were learned, confidence was built, and friendships began in the front seats and patient compartment. Some of those friendships will last a lifetime.

This truck has seen good seasons and difficult ones. It has traveled through snowstorms, heavy rain, dark back roads, long nights, and countless miles. It brought our crews safely to the people who needed them and, just as importantly, brought them home again.

Every old ambulance carries more than equipment, it carries stories. The laughter between calls, the quiet moments after the hard ones, the familiar rattles, the worn floors, and the memories tucked into every compartment.

The new ambulance will begin its own story soon. It will serve new patients, carry new crews, and create memories of its own.

For every mile, every patient, every lesson, and every safe return, I am grateful.

You served this department and these communities well, old girl. Thank you 30A2.

If you stepped outside today and thought, "Why does it look like we're living in a Mad Max movie?" you're not imagining things.

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has made its way into our area, giving the sky that yellow-orange tint and causing poor air quality that may worsen throughout the afternoon.

For most healthy people, it's more of an annoyance than a danger. But if you have asthma, COPD, or another chronic lung condition, today is a good day to take it easy.

A few simple tips:
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities if you can.
• Keep windows closed and run your air conditioning if available.
• If you have a rescue inhaler or other prescribed medications, keep them with you and use them as directed.
• Check on family members, friends, or neighbors who have chronic health conditions.

If you find yourself having trouble breathing, experiencing chest pain, or your usual medications aren't helping, don't try to "tough it out." Seek medical attention or dial 911.

Hopefully the skies (and the air) will improve soon. Until then, stay safe, stay hydrated, and maybe save the outdoor marathon of yard work for another day.

We probably don't need to tell anyone that it's hot outside.

With several days of high temperatures in the forecast and "feels-like" temperatures climbing to 108, it's a good time to slow down, check in on family, friends, and neighbors, and take a few simple steps to stay safe.

A few reminders:
• Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Take frequent breaks if you're working or spending time outdoors.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing when possible.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• If you have air conditioning, don't be afraid to use it. If you don't, consider spending time in an air-conditioned public building during the hottest part of the day. Libraries are great, shopping malls, wherever you can get to.
• Keep an eye on older adults, young children, and anyone with medical conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

If you or someone else begins experiencing dizziness, confusion, excessive weakness, nausea, or stops sweating despite the heat, move to a cooler place, begin cooling the person, and call 911.
