Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps-WVAC

Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps-WVAC WVAC is an emergency service that provides 911 ambulance coverage to the town of As our name suggests, we are a volunteer organization.

Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WVAC) is an emergency medical service that provides 911 emergency ambulance coverage to the town of Wilton, CT. We operate two state-of-the-art equipped Basic Life Support ambulances and a full-time paramedic contracted from Norwalk Hospital responds in an Advanced Life Support equipped fly car. All our vehicles are based at the Wilton town complex which is home t

o the town’s Police, Fire, and Public Works departments, as well as our own headquarters, which is easily recognizable as the house upon the hill behind the fire department. It provides a comfortable and convenient headquarters for our members. We do contract with Norwalk Hospital to provide daytime
coverage during the weekdays, but our members are all volunteers and cover the hours between 6pm-6am during the week and 24 hours a day on the weekends. During those shifts, a crew composed of a Crew Chief and a Driver (sometimes supplemented by a third attendant) work in conjunction with a Norwalk Hospital Paramedic to provide Emergency Medical Service to the town. We have roughly 50 members, most of whom are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) trained to render care ranging from simple splinting of a broken finger to lifesaving emergency defibrillation using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Wilton’s police, fire, and ambulance units all play major roles in the dynamic of an emergency medical call. For all ambulance calls, at least one police unit is dispatched and often arrives before the ambulance to begin rendering medical care. For more serious calls, the fire department is also dispatched to supplement police and EMS. While most scheduled crews respond to emergency calls together in the ambulance, WVAC adds another tier to the normal emergency response system. We encourage our members to participate in a system we call “Neighborhood Response.” Most of our members are actual residents or daytime employees in Wilton and are issued pagers with which they can hear and respond to calls. If one of our off-duty EMTs receives a call that is near to his/her location, he/she is encouraged to respond and begin assessing and treating the patient as yet another layer in the medical care process. This multi-tier response system ensures that every emergency medical call that comes in receives the most rapid, effective response possible.

Wilton Pride brought the town together in late May, and we were glad to be on-site providing medical standby coverage. Our crew was out there as neighbors and friends, not just responders.⁣

Pride is part of Wilton. So are we. 🏳️‍🌈⁣

Every spring, we watch a group of our High School volunteers close one chapter and start another.

This year's graduating seniors came up through WVAC during some formative years, learning skills, taking responsibility, and showing what it looks like to give back before most people ever do.

We're proud of them and grateful for every shift they gave to Wilton.

This Memorial Day, we honor those who gave everything in service to others.

To the men and women today who are currently serving or have served, thank you. To the families who carry that weight alongside them, thank you.

WVAC will be on duty this holiday, as always, ready to serve the community we're proud to call home.

This week is National EMS Week — a moment to recognize the people who show up when Wilton needs them most.

At WVAC, that means your neighbors. Teachers, students, parents, retirees, and working professionals who train, certify, and volunteer their time so that 24/7 emergency care is always just a call away.

As a volunteer-run 501(c)(3), WVAC depends on the dedication of its members and the support of the Wilton community to keep this service running.

EMS Week is a national tribute, but here in Wilton, it's also a thank you to the volunteers who make WVAC possible.

To every EMT, driver, dispatcher, and supporter who keeps this organization going: thank you.

Some calls stay with you.

This is one of those stories: a Wilton family sharing what it meant to have WVAC there when it mattered most. Not just the response, but the care behind it.

We're grateful we could be there for this family. 💙

Being present at local events isn't just about standby coverage.

It's about knowing the layout of the spaces we might need to respond in. Building trust with the people who live and work here. Staying visible as a resource, not just a service that shows up after something goes wrong.

WVAC has been part of Wilton's community calendar for decades. That familiarity has a real impact when seconds matter.

May in Wilton looks different than January, and so does the road.

More kids walking to school. More cyclists on Route 33. More new drivers getting their first hours in. All of it happening at once.

A few things worth keeping in mind this time of year:

🚶 Pedestrian traffic picks up significantly in spring, especially near schools and parks
🚲 Cyclists are harder to spot than cars. Give them space.
🚗 Teen drivers are logging required hours this time of year. Expect the unexpected.
🌧 Spring rain can mean slick roads well into May, so slow down!

It's a busy season on Wilton's streets. A little extra attention goes a long way.

When an ambulance shows up in Wilton, it is likely someone you know from your community. 💙

Meet some of the people who make WVAC what it is: neighbors who have trained hard, committed their time, and show up shift after shift to serve this town. Whether they are volunteering their time or are part of the dedicated team we bring in to ensure 24/7 coverage, their stories are worth knowing.
