Remember back in January when we challenged you to unlock your civic superpowers with the 2026 Toolkit? We focused on a few themes, including lowering your monthly utility bills. Usually, that means tracking your home’s electric use—but summer 2026 has a new challenge in store for us.
Wilson County is currently experiencing an extreme drought. While the City has not instituted any mandatory water restrictions yet, we will need to consider them if conditions don’t improve soon.
We have rain in the forecast this weekend, and Thursday afternoon’s brief rainfall over Buckhorn Reservoir was a welcome sight! While we can’t control the weather, we can control our daily routines to lessen the demand on our water supply.
Here are your Good Neighbor Water Savings Tips for the weekend:
Check for Leaks: A single leaky faucet or a running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water a month without you even realizing it. Take a few minutes to check your toilets, faucets, and showerheads today.
Add a Rain Barrel: Our Stormwater Division will be at the Wilson Farmers and Artisans Market this Saturday morning selling 55-gallon rain barrels for $75 (complete with a spigot and mesh lid). They are a simple, effective way to capture runoff and store free water for your garden!
We will share more simple tips next week. We aren't saying we’re superstitious, but maybe making conservation plans right now will convince the clouds to open up.
