Remember back in January when we challenged you to unlock your civic superpowers with the 2026 Toolkit? We focused on a few themes, including lowering your monthly utility bills. Usually, that means tracking your home’s electric use—but summer 2026 has a new challenge in store for us.

Wilson County is currently experiencing an extreme drought. While the City has not instituted any mandatory water restrictions yet, we will need to consider them if conditions don’t improve soon.

We have rain in the forecast this weekend, and Thursday afternoon’s brief rainfall over Buckhorn Reservoir was a welcome sight! While we can’t control the weather, we can control our daily routines to lessen the demand on our water supply.

Here are your Good Neighbor Water Savings Tips for the weekend:

Check for Leaks: A single leaky faucet or a running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water a month without you even realizing it. Take a few minutes to check your toilets, faucets, and showerheads today.

Add a Rain Barrel: Our Stormwater Division will be at the Wilson Farmers and Artisans Market this Saturday morning selling 55-gallon rain barrels for $75 (complete with a spigot and mesh lid). They are a simple, effective way to capture runoff and store free water for your garden!

We will share more simple tips next week. We aren't saying we’re superstitious, but maybe making conservation plans right now will convince the clouds to open up.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. today.

Hot temperatures and high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. If you are spending time outdoors, be sure to drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

Please take a moment to check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Due to today's conditions, Gig in the Park featuring Caroline Keller has been rescheduled.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and take care of one another.

Please read Wilson Fire/Rescue Services NC PSA on car safety during the summer heat.

Please read Wilson Fire/Rescue Services NC PSA on car safety during the summer heat.

The weather is getting HOT🥵, and so is the inside of your car. If you have to leave your car🚗, even for a minute⏱️, ALWAYS take your children with you. The temperature of a parked car can be up to 30 degrees higher than the outside temperature🌡️. Even having the car window open makes minimal difference. NEVER leave kids 🏃‍♀️🏃alone in cars, NO EXCEPTIONS. NO EXCUSES. (Don't play with lighters or matches.)

Our Financial Services employees recently completed a pet supplies drive and donated the items to the Wilson County Humane Society. That department routinely helps local nonprofits and we are thankful for their giving hearts.

Speaking of our furry friends, Wilson County is expecting some extreme heat Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures nearing 100 degrees. This is a good time to make sure that outdoor animals have shade and access to water.

As temperatures start to hit the upper 90s, we will need to take our usual precautions and start garbage and recycling routes a little earlier, beginning this Monday. This allows our Environmental Services team to finish up their work before the peak afternoon temperatures hit.

How does this affect you? If you know our trucks are in your neighborhood early on your pickup days, please take your containers out earlier or even the night before. And as always, use the FixIt Wilson app to schedule special pickups.

We hope not to inconvenience anyone, but we need to try to keep our employees as safe as possible. Typically we are able to shift the schedules back after the summer. Thank you!

Some Wilson Energy customers experienced a power outage this morning. Thankfully that doesn’t happen too often in Wilson, so we wanted to explain a bit about what happened.

Today’s outage was caused by an issue with a transmission line. The transmission system feeds Wilson Energy with power from generating sources, it’s like the energy highway into Wilson. This issue cut power to two substations that power more than 5,000 customers. Fixing transmission lines is rarely easy or quick, so this outage could have lasted many hours.

Fortunately, Wilson Energy has system redundancy, meaning that we have multiple pathways in place throughout the majority of the City’s grid. When Wilson Energy crews arrived on scene, they were able to reroute the affected substations to alternative sources of power while they worked on the transmission line.

While we understand that any power outage is an inconvenience, today’s interruption lasted a total of 94 minutes – with more than 70% of customers restored after an hour – not many hours, as could be expected.

A conventional radial system without redundancy would have affected twice as many customers for a much longer time. Redundancy also protects our line crews, who continued to work this afternoon to address the issue that caused the outage, by giving them the time and space to work safely, all while our customers’ power was restored.

System redundancy is one of the keys to high system reliability. Wilson Energy consistently has reliability measures much higher than the state and national averages. On average, Wilson Energy customers experience only 50.75 outage minutes per year, ranking among the top electric utilities in the country.

We know Wilson has the best line crews, bar none. Today we also want to recognize the engineers who built our system and the city leaders who have consistently made investments in a safe, reliable electric system.
