Good afternoon Hearne families. This is Principal Olinka Baker with announcements, updates, and reminders for the week of October 26. Report Cards will go home on Monday, October 26.

This week, we will continue to fight against bullying during Red Ribbon Spirit Week. The different dress days are as follows:
Monday- Rally in Red (Wear Red)
Tuesday- Drugs are Old School (Choose a favorite era: 50s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or Y2K)
Wednesday- Be a Hero; Stay Drug Free (Wear a super hero graphic tee or costume)
Thursday- Sock it to Bad Choices (Wear crazy, bright, or mismatched socks)
Friday- Cast Away Bad Choices (Dress up as a character from Disney, Pixar, or your favorite movie)

Also on Monday, October 26, our students will be treated to an in school performance by the NC Symphony. I love this opportunity for our kids!

Fall Picture Day is Monday, November 2.

Parents, this is a reminder that if you would like to serve as a chaperone on your child’s field trips or any other events, you must complete an application in Volunteer Tracker and be approved.

Candy Man orders are in. If you have not picked up your child’s order, please do so as soon as possible. The orders cannot be sent home with students.

Wilson County Schools has kicked off its annual United Way Campaign. The United Way is instrumental in providing assistance and critical resources to homeless students and families throughout Wilson County. Our goal at Hearne Elementary is to raise $1800 towards this initiative. Please consider donating. You can send donations in by your student. We will also have a donation bucket at the front desk and in the car line.

Parents, thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child is present, on time, and prepared for school each day. Instruction begins at 8:00 am and dismissal is 3:00 pm. There is no checkout after 2:30 pm.

Esta semana, continuaremos luchando contra el acoso escolar durante la Semana del Espíritu de la Cinta Roja. Las Escuelas del Condado de Wilson han lanzado su campaña anual de United Way. United Way es fundamental para brindar asistencia y recursos esenciales a estudiantes y familias sin hogar en todo el Condado de Wilson. Nuestro objetivo en la Escuela Primaria Hearne es recaudar $1800 para esta iniciativa. Por favor, consideren donar. Pueden enviar donaciones a través de su hijo/a. También tendremos un bote de donaciones en la recepción y en la fila de autos.

Congratulations to our very own Ms. Lark for her recognition at the recent WCS Board meeting.

Shout Out! to Frederick Douglass Elementary 2nd & 3rd Grade Spanish Immersion Teacher Lauren Allen, Frederick Douglass Elementary Multi-Classroom Leader for 2nd through 4th grade Emily Vicidomini, and Hearne Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Yasmin Lark for being recognized by the Wilson County Board of Education on Oct. 19! They received Good News Awards for their selection as North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Scholarship recipients. 🎉

Ms. Allen was selected as the Noma Henderson Leonard and Elsie Brame Hunt Honored Educator Scholarship recipient; Ms. Vicidomini was selected as the John F. and Emy Swindell Hinnant Honored Educator Scholarship recipient; and Ms. Lark was selected as the Mabel Roberson McIntyre Honored Educator Scholarship recipient.

Through the scholarships, they were each awarded a 5-day seminar at either the Ocracoke or Cullowhee NCCAT campus. All costs associated with the seminars are covered (a total value of $2,400), and the recipients also received a $250 stipend for classroom use.

Good afternoon Hearne families. This is Principal Olinka Baker with announcements, updates, and reminders for the week of October 19, 2026.

Students will take beginning of year benchmarks this week. The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, October 20- 3-5 Reading
Wednesday, October 21- 2-5 Math
Thursday, October 22- 2-5 Make Ups
Friday, October 23- 5th Science
Parents, it is extremely important that students are not only present each day, but we really need you to make sure they are on time. Testing will begin at 8:30 am. Students will not be able to enter the classroom once testing begins. I ask that you delay any early checkouts until after 12:00 pm as our school will be under testing conditions. Take some time to review your child’s work with them and make sure students get a good night’s rest to help prepare them for testing.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. We will celebrate Unity Day on Wednesday, October 21st. We are asking everyone to wear orange to help send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Next week, October 26-30, we will continue our stance against bullying during Red Ribbon Week Spirit Week. The different dress days are posted in Class Dojo and our page.

Los estudiantes tomarán las pruebas de referencia de inicio de año esta semana. El horario es el siguiente:
Martes, 20 de octubre - Lectura de 3.º a 5.º grado
Miércoles, 21 de octubre - Matemáticas de 2.º a 5.º grado
Jueves, 22 de octubre - Recuperaciones de 2.º a 5.º grado
Viernes, 23 de octubre - Ciencias de 5.º grado
Padres, es extremadamente importante que los estudiantes no solo estén presentes todos los días, sino que realmente necesitamos que se aseguren de que lleguen a tiempo. Las pruebas comenzarán a las 8:30 a. m. Los estudiantes no podrán entrar al salón de clases una vez que comiencen las pruebas. Les pido que retrasen cualquier salida anticipada hasta después de las 12:00 p. m. ya que nuestra escuela estará en condiciones de prueba. Thursday, October 15 will end the first quarter grading period. Report Cards will go home on Monday, October 26. Please contact your child’s teacher to schedule a conference as needed.

Friday, October 16 is a teacher workday. There will be no school for students.

We will celebrate Red Ribbon Spirit Week October 26-30. Mrs. Rowland will share the dress days in Class Dojo and social media.

Our fall picture day is scheduled for Monday, November 2.

Parents, thank you for ensuring your child is present, on time, and prepared for school each day. Instruction begins at 8:00 am and dismissal is 3:00 pm. There is no checkout after 2:30 pm. If your student is tardy, you will need to physically come in and sign them into school. Students who are frequently tardy or picked up late will be assigned to a WCS bus route. If a bus route is unavailable due to your student being on reassignment or out of district, the reassignment will be revoked and your student will have to return to their base school. Please note that students who are tardy or check out early 6 times or more in a quarter are not able to participate in PBIS Celebrations; but more importantly, students miss out on valuable instruction when they are continuously late or checkout early.

El viernes 16 de octubre es un día de trabajo para los maestros. No habrá clases para los estudiantes.

Celebraremos la Semana del Espíritu de la Cinta Roja del 26 al 30 de octubre. La Sra. Rowland compartirá los días de vestimenta en Class Dojo y redes sociales.

Nuestro día de fotos de otoño está programado para el lunes 2 de noviembre.

Padres, gracias por asegurarse de que su hijo esté presente, a tiempo y preparado para la escuela todos los días. La instrucción comienza a las 8:00 a. m. y la salida es a las 3:00 p. m. No hay salida después de las 2:30 p. m. Si su hijo llega tarde, deberá venir personalmente a la escuela y firmar su entrada. Si una ruta de autobús no está disponible debido a que su hijo/a está en reasignación o fuera del distrito, la reasignación se revocará y su hijo/a deberá regresar a su escuela de origen. Tenga en cuenta que los estudiantes que llegan tarde o salen antes de tiempo 6 veces o más en un trimestre no pueden participar en las Celebraciones PBIS; pero, aún más importante, los estudiantes se pierden valiosas lecciones cuando llegan tarde o salen antes de tiempo continuamente.

Our fall Candy Man fundraiser ends on Monday, October 5. All order forms and money are due.

On Tuesday, October 6, our fourth graders will travel to Batts Tree Farm in Macclesfield NC for the Environmental Field Day.

The Quarter 1 grading period ends on October 15.

In the Hornets' Nest, every adult in the building is considered a teacher, including our custodial staff. We are sending a huge THANK YOU to our team who ensures that our staff and students are in a clean, nurturing environment that Is conducive to teaching and learning. Mr. Alderman, Mr. Smith, and Ms. Wyatt, you are loved, you are valued, and you matter!

Names of attendees who completed the survey will be entered into a drawing for a gift bag for themselves and a grade-level appropriate resource kit to work with their student at home.
