Building stronger neighborhoods starts with empowering the people who lead them. 🏘️ On Saturday, September 12, 2026, Councilwoman Yolanda McCoy (6th District) hosted the DANA x Wilmington City Council Civic Association Training in partnership with the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA).

Civic association leaders and community members came together to learn about the process of becoming a 501(c)(3), including nonprofit formation, building a Board of Directors, creating bylaws, understanding legal responsibilities, and accessing opportunities that can help their organizations grow.

Our civic associations play an important role in strengthening Wilmington’s neighborhoods and Councilwoman McCoy remains committed to making sure our community leaders have access to the tools, information, and resources they need to expand their impact.

🇩🇴🇵🇷🇲🇽🇨🇴🇻🇪🇬🇹🇭🇳🇸🇻 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage in Wilmington! 🎉 On Thursday, September 10, Wilmington City Council Members Christian Willauer (5th District), Yolanda McCoy (6th District), and James Spadola (At-Large) joined community leaders, residents, and supporters at the Latin American Community Center for its annual Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff and proclamation ceremony.

During the celebration, Council Members proudly presented a Wilmington City Council Resolution recognizing the Latin American Community Center and its longstanding commitment to Wilmington’s Latino community.

Known throughout the community as “The Latin Center,” the LACC has served Wilmington’s Hilltop neighborhood since 1969, empowering the Latino community through education, advocacy, partnerships, and essential programs and services.

Observed annually from September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the United States.

📚 EVERY PAGE MATTERS. EVERY READER MATTERS. In recognition of National Literacy Month, 1st District City Councilman Coby Owens is challenging residents across Wilmington to make reading and literacy a community priority throughout September and beyond.

“Reading opens doors to places, ideas, and opportunities that can change a young person’s life,” said Councilman Owens. “This month, I am challenging families throughout Wilmington to put down the screens for a little while, pick up a book, and read together.”

📖 Here’s how you can get involved:

• Read with a child and make reading part of your family routine.
• Visit a Wilmington library and sign up for a FREE Delaware library card.
• Donate new or gently used books or organize a community book drive or swap.
• Support adult literacy programs and volunteer opportunities.
• Become a reading mentor.
• Start a September reading challenge with your family, school, church, business, or neighborhood.

Wilmington residents can explore resources at the Wilmington Public Library, North Wilmington Branch, and the new NoMa (North Market) Library, including books, youth programming, technology, creative spaces, educational resources, and more. Families with children from birth through age 5 can also explore Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for eligible children.

Wilmington City Council’s Office of Educational Advocacy (OEA) is also commemorating National Literacy Month through partnerships with The HomeLibrary Project, United Way of Delaware, Kuumba Academy, EastSide Charter School, and other Wilmington schools to create literacy experiences for children, families, educators, and community members.

“Literacy is not just a school issue. It is a community issue,” said Councilman Owens. “Whether you are helping a child sound out their first words or helping an adult strengthen their reading skills, you are giving someone another tool to succeed.”

Councilman Owens’ challenge to Wilmington is simple:

📕 Read a book.
👨‍👩‍👧 Read with a child.
📚 Share a book.
🤝 Help someone learn.

🕊️ HONORING THE LEGACY OF RYSHEEMA DIXON🏆 Former late Wilmington City Council At-Large Councilwoman Rysheema Dixon was recently honored by the Delaware Blue Coats with the August Community All-Star Award in recognition of her extraordinary life, service, and commitment to Wilmington’s youth and community. 🌟

Through her leadership and the impact of Wilmington Play Streets, Rysheema dedicated herself to creating opportunities, bringing families together, and uplifting young people throughout our city.

Although she is deeply missed, her legacy of service, compassion, and community continues to live on through the countless lives she touched.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition of a remarkable Wilmington leader whose impact will never be forgotten. 💙🕊️
