📣 Public Notice: Repeated Alerts During System Test 📣
This morning, during the Winter Storm Planning meeting for Clinton County, Emergency Management staff conducted a test of a new keyword-based text alert feature. This feature allows authorized users—such as representatives from the Sheriff’s Office—to send a pre-formatted public alert by texting a keyword from a recognized phone. The tool is designed to help officials issue timely snow emergency updates directly from the field without returning to a desktop computer.
During the test, the system unexpectedly repeated the alert multiple times. The vendor, InspironLogistics, was contacted immediately, and the alert was deactivated to stop the repetition. A similar issue occurred during a test last year, and EMA is awaiting confirmation from the vendor that the root cause has been resolved.
The vendor has now implemented a limiter that prevents the same alert from being sent more than once within a 30-minute period. According to InspironLogistics, this measure should prevent similar issues in the future.
We understand that the repeated messages caused frustration for some residents. Technology usually improves communication—until it doesn’t. This is precisely why EMA conducts system tests: to identify and correct problems before a real emergency occurs.
⛈️ About Weather Alert Subscriptions ⚡
In the past, some subscribers may notice receiving multiple notifications for the same weather event. This typically occurs when a user is subscribed to multiple alert categories (for example, 24/7 Severe Weather Warnings, 24/7 Severe Weather Watches, and All County Severe Weather Warnings, et cetera). Tornado Warnings are sent to all categories by default, which can result in duplicate alerts, so members do not need to subscribe to 24/7 options.
EMA is actively reviewing user profiles to streamline alert settings and reduce unnecessary notifications that can contribute to alert fatigue. If you believe you’re receiving duplicate or excessive alerts, please contact Clinton County EMA at (937) 382-6673, and staff will adjust your profile promptly.
