🚨 VA MATH FOR DUMMIES 🚨
There’s an old saying that math is hard and generally speaking, 1 + 1 = 2. Easy day.
But then there’s VA Math… and suddenly it feels like Lt. Dan trying to triangulate a danger-close fire mission with an upside down map, a broken protractor, and a bezel ring with no tick marks. 🤣
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear at the Clinton County Veterans Service Commission is “I’m rated 50% for one condition and 50% for another, so I should be 100%.”
Negative, ghost rider, that pattern is NOT full (100% that is).
The VA does NOT simply add percentages together. Instead, they use what’s called the “whole person concept.” Basically, the VA starts with you as 100% “healthy” and subtracts disabilities one at a time.
Example:
🔹 First disability = 50%, leaving you 50% “efficient" or healthy
🔹 Second disability = 50%
The VA then takes the "healthy" 50% part of you and multiplies it by the next highest disability. In this case another 50% disability times the healthy(?) 50% that you are and that gives you 25%.
Then to make it more complicated they round up to the nearest 10% so in this case 50% x 50% = 30%.
Then they add the 30% to the original 50% rating and you are now at 80%. Clear as mud right?
And this "math" is also why that last 10-20% is like climbing Mt Suribachi or Heartbreak Ridge to get to 100%.
And not to complicate matters but the VA also has a bi-lateral bonus program, one of the rare instances where they give you something for "free". In the simplest of terms, bilateral means you have service-connected disabilities affecting both sides of your body (paired body parts). Specifically, this applies to both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles (e.g., biceps/triceps). The VA recognizes that having two affected limbs has a greater impact on your mobility and daily life, hence you get a 10% "bonus".
Confused yet? Don’t worry — you’re not alone. Most veterans eventually stop trying to do VA math and that’s where we come in.
If you have questions about your rating, increases, secondary conditions, or how the VA combined your percentages, contact the CCVSC and schedule an appointment with one of our Veteran Service Officers.
But if you want to see this in action, attached is a link is to one of the more accurate online calculators. The type of disability is not as important as the percentage so to give you an idea of how the VA math works.
