🚨 VA MATH FOR DUMMIES 🚨

There’s an old saying that math is hard and generally speaking, 1 + 1 = 2. Easy day.

But then there’s VA Math… and suddenly it feels like Lt. Dan trying to triangulate a danger-close fire mission with an upside down map, a broken protractor, and a bezel ring with no tick marks. 🤣

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear at the Clinton County Veterans Service Commission is “I’m rated 50% for one condition and 50% for another, so I should be 100%.”

Negative, ghost rider, that pattern is NOT full (100% that is).

The VA does NOT simply add percentages together. Instead, they use what’s called the “whole person concept.” Basically, the VA starts with you as 100% “healthy” and subtracts disabilities one at a time.

Example:
🔹 First disability = 50%, leaving you 50% “efficient" or healthy

🔹 Second disability = 50%
The VA then takes the "healthy" 50% part of you and multiplies it by the next highest disability. In this case another 50% disability times the healthy(?) 50% that you are and that gives you 25%.

Then to make it more complicated they round up to the nearest 10% so in this case 50% x 50% = 30%.

Then they add the 30% to the original 50% rating and you are now at 80%. Clear as mud right?

And this "math" is also why that last 10-20% is like climbing Mt Suribachi or Heartbreak Ridge to get to 100%.

And not to complicate matters but the VA also has a bi-lateral bonus program, one of the rare instances where they give you something for "free". In the simplest of terms, bilateral means you have service-connected disabilities affecting both sides of your body (paired body parts). Specifically, this applies to both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles (e.g., biceps/triceps). The VA recognizes that having two affected limbs has a greater impact on your mobility and daily life, hence you get a 10% "bonus".

Confused yet? Don’t worry — you’re not alone. Most veterans eventually stop trying to do VA math and that’s where we come in.

If you have questions about your rating, increases, secondary conditions, or how the VA combined your percentages, contact the CCVSC and schedule an appointment with one of our Veteran Service Officers.

But if you want to see this in action, attached is a link is to one of the more accurate online calculators. The type of disability is not as important as the percentage so to give you an idea of how the VA math works.

Use our VA Disability Calculator to determine your veteran's benefits. Get the support you need with DAV's range of services.

🇺🇸 CCVSC BENEFITS BREAKDOWN: WHAT IS TDIU? 🇺🇸

Many veterans hear “100% VA disability” and assume it only applies if their combined rating equals 100%. That’s not always the case.

TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability) allows qualifying veterans to be paid at the 100% VA compensation rate even if their combined rating is lower — if their service-connected conditions prevent them from maintaining substantially gainful employment.

In general, eligibility may include:
▪️ One service-connected disability rated at 60% or higher
OR
▪️ Multiple disabilities with one rated at least 40% and a combined rating of 70% or higher

âť—The key factor is whether your service-connected conditions prevent steady employment. This can include physical injuries, chronic pain, PTSD, mental health conditions, or other service-connected disabilities.

⚠️ Important:
TDIU is different from Permanent & Total (P&T). Veterans on TDIU typically have employment income restrictions and may be reevaluated by the VA. Veterans rated P&T generally do not have those same work restrictions and their conditions are considered static.

Some veterans may still qualify for TDIU while working in limited or protected work environments. Every case is unique.

If you think you may qualify or have questions about filing VA Form 21-8940, contact the Clinton County Veterans Service Commission and speak with a Veteran Service Officer.

📍 Don’t self-disqualify yourself because you “aren’t 100%.” Let our trained VSOs review your case.

🎮🪖 CLINTON COUNTY VETERANS — THIS ONE IS FOR THE GAMERS 🪖🎮

Whether you’re running Warzone after work, grinding camo challenges at 2AM, or yelling at your squad because nobody watches the flank… this one might actually interest you. 👀

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, USAA and the Call of Duty Endowment are offering a FREE C.O.D.E. Navigator: Tracer Pack for eligible Veterans and service members in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone while supplies last.

The pack includes:
“Argonaut” Operator Skin
“Astronaut” Operator Skin
“Cratered Crescent” Weapon Blueprint
“Gibbous Guardian” Weapon Blueprint

“Deep Sea” Spray
“Handshake in the Void” Weapon Sticker
“Space Walk” Calling Card
“Spacial Sonar” Emblem
“Astrofrog Constellation” Loading Screen
1 Hour Double Level XP Token
1 Hour Double Weapon XP Tokens

But here’s the real side quest most people don’t realize…

The Call of Duty Endowment isn’t just about gaming. Since 2009, they’ve helped place more than 169,000 Veterans into real-world careers through training, resume help, certifications, interview prep, and employment programs.

Translation?
Your skill tree from the military still matters.

Leadership. Logistics. Communications. Security. Maintenance. Medical. Team coordination under stress. Adaptability. Problem solving. Mission focus. Those are all transferable stats in civilian life — even if it doesn’t always feel that way when you first come home to Clinton County.

A lot of younger Veterans come back here after years in a high-tempo environment and suddenly feel disconnected. Different pace. Different people. Different mission. Sometimes it feels like you logged out of one server and spawned into another one with no tutorial.

That’s one reason the CCVSC is trying to build more outreach geared toward younger Veterans — not just paperwork and appointments, but actual connection, networking, careers, education, and community engagement.

🎮 So let’s hear it:
➡️ What games are Clinton County Veterans playing right now?
➡️ Xbox, PlayStation, or PC?
➡️ Anybody interested in Veteran gaming nights or tournaments someday?
➡️ What would help younger Veterans reconnect locally?

Drop your gamer tag, favorite game, or ideas below.

And remember — if you need help with VA claims, benefits, school, employment resources, transportation, or just figuring out your next objective marker in life, the Clinton County Veterans Service Commission is here to help. 🇺🇸

We know there is a LOT of information coming through this page. At times it probably feels like trying to drink from a firehose… and trust us, we get it.

Part of the reason is simple: we live in a digital and increasingly complex world. To better tailor our outreach, we had to let the “Skynet” algorithms (yes, think 1984 Terminator movie references) analyze what veterans and families are actually engaging. This will allow us to push out content that matters the most and in a format that will be a lot easier to digest. So you should start seeing a change in how we present info soon.

The second reason? There truly IS a huge amount of information out there that can improve a veteran’s life — from benefits and transportation to jobs, education, healthcare, local partnerships, and community programs we are actively building here in Clinton County. And for many of our veteran community they simply don't know about many of these benefits and programs.

We promise the messaging will continue getting simpler, cleaner, and easier to navigate as we refine the system. Our goal is to become your one-stop shop for all things Clinton County veterans and beyond. And honestly… it’s working. Since beginning this outreach retool in mid-March, we’ve seen over a 12% increase in viewers, meaning we are now reaching at least 100 more veterans and family members than before. Overall page views are also up over 1,300% (yes, that’s two zeros).

Over time, much of this information will also be organized onto the CCVSC website so it is easier to find instead of buried in the Facebook feed.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we build this out. In our view, too much useful information is better than not enough. Think of CCVSC as Superman… and this page as the Daily Planet.

BREAKING NEWS!

For those unaware, our friends over in the Paint Creek area (about a 50-minute drive with a good tailwind 🌬️🎣) will be hosting Operation Fish With a Hero on June 6th!

Honestly, there are not many better ways to spend a warm Saturday in June than casting a line, swapping stories, and reconnecting with fellow veterans, battle buddies, and warriors who understand the journey.

Events like these are more than just fishing trips — they are about camaraderie, decompressing, and staying connected with the veteran community.

If you are looking to get out of the house, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with other veterans, this may be worth checking out.

Any veterans in Clinton County who would be interested in this kind of event here locally please let us know in the comment section and we will see what we can do.

🇺🇸 CCVSC FEMALE VETERAN SPOTLIGHT 🇺🇸

On May 28, 1980, history was made at West Point when 62 women graduated and were commissioned as Second Lieutenants—the first female graduates in the Academy’s history.

📜 Enabled by legislation signed in 1975 opening military academies to women

BIG NEWS for veterans looking to get into the trucking and transportation industry!

The VA has implemented a major part of the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act making it easier and faster for veterans to use their G.I. Bill benefits for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training programs.

Veterans have been able to use the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill for CDL training since 2009, but until now the approval process for new school locations could take YEARS due to federal and state requirements.

That changes now.

Under the updated law:
• CDL schools expanding to new locations can be approved much faster
• Veterans will gain quicker access to nearby training opportunities
• Schools using the same approved curriculum can streamline expansion
• Veterans can move into stable, high-demand careers sooner

WHY THIS MATTERS:
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver employment is projected to continue growing through 2034, creating strong opportunities for veterans transitioning into civilian careers.

This is another example of reducing barriers while helping veterans connect to real-world employment opportunities that value discipline, responsibility, logistics experience, and mission-focused work ethic — skills many veterans already possess.
