The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League

The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League The mission of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League (MWUL) is to empower people of color to achieve economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights.

The Urban League movement was founded in 1910. The National Urban League headquartered in New York City, spearheads our nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based movement. The heart of the Urban League movement is our professionally staffed Urban League affiliates. As the 115th affiliate the MWUL embraces and pursues the National Urban League’s 5 Point Empowerment Agenda:

Education and Youth Empow

erment: Ensuring that all children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reliance in the 21st century by eliminating the achievement gap between minorities and increasing the graduation rate among African-Americans and Hispanics.
Economic Empowerment: Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through job training, business development, growth in quality jobs, home-ownership, entrepreneurship, and wealth accumulation.
Health and Quality of Life Empowerment: Working to build healthy and safe communities to eliminate health disparities through prevention, healthy eating, fitness, as well as ensuring complete access to affordable healthcare for all people.
Civic Engagement and Leadership Empowerment: Empowering all people to take an active role in determining the direction, quality of life, public policy and leadership in their communities by full participation as citizens and voters, as well as through active community service and leadership development.
Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment: Promoting and ensuring our civil rights by actively working to eradicate all barriers to equal participation in all aspects of American society, whether political, economic, social, educational or cultural.

Today marks 10 years since 49 people were murdered at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in one of the deadliest acts of anti-LGBTQ+ violence in our nation’s history.

We remember the lives stolen, honor the survivors, and stand with the families and communities forever changed by that tragedy. Pulse was meant to be a place of joy and belonging. Instead, it became the site of unimaginable loss fueled by hate.

As we mark this dark anniversary, we reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves to live, love, gather, and thrive without fear. We honor the 49 lives lost by continuing the work to build communities safe from hate, bigotry, and violence.

We’re fighting for every single one of us.

Pride Month is a reminder that the ongoing fight for justice, equity, and dignity must include all people within our communities. We reflect on the Black LGBTQ+ leaders and visionaries who have always pushed our movement forward, from Bayard Rustin organizing the 1963 March on Washington and James Baldwin prolifically writing our lived experiences to activist Marsha P. Johnson, who once said “There is no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.”

This comes at a particularly challenging time as trans, nonbinary, and other members of the + community face intense social and political pressures. We must continue to and insist on full belonging.
