The Wilmington Police Department, in recognition of privacy concerns expressed in our community, is terminating its contract with Flock Safety and will remove both existing cameras as soon as possible.

One camera has been located at Middlesex Avenue and Federal Street since March 2023, and another has been located at Main Street and Bridge Lane since June 2024.

Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) cameras have been instrumental in investigations and beneficial to our Department. However, at this moment, the community’s privacy concerns and questions about the way Flock Security uses data outweigh the continued use of its equipment.

The Department anticipates getting a $2,500 refund from Flock Safety since the department is terminating its contract earlier than its Feb. 27, 2027 expiration date, and the company has acknowledged that such a refund is available.

Should the Department consider use of ALPRs in the future, the community will be notified in advance and public input will guide any final decision.

Today, on National Police Woman Day, we recognize and thank the women who serve the Wilmington community with professionalism, dedication, and commitment each day.

We are proud to recognize Detective/SRO McMeekin, Officer Sousa, Officer Goodwin, and Officer Hanson for their service to our Department and the community of Wilmington.

Thank you for the work you do, the people you help, and the example you set.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken in the attacks on our nation. Among them were hundreds of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders who ran toward danger while others sought safety.

Today, we remember every life lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. We also remember those who have died in the years since from illnesses related to their service and exposure following the attacks.

Whether you remember exactly where you were that September morning or were not yet born, the responsibility to remember belongs to all of us. Twenty-five years later, we honor their lives, their sacrifice, and the extraordinary courage shown on one of our nation's darkest days.

The Town of Wilmington will hold a memorial ceremony this morning at 8:30 a.m. on the Town Common. The entire community is invited to attend.

Chief Pupa, along with members of the Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington Police Explorers are on the Town Common this afternoon placing flags in honor of the nearly 3000 victims of the terrorist attacks on our nation 25 years ago. We will never forget.

It’s !

If your commute felt a little longer today, you weren’t imagining it. School is back in session, buses are on the road, summer vacations are over, and several construction projects have joined forces to test everyone’s patience.

Please allow extra time in the morning, have patience, slow down in school zones, and watch for children waiting at bus stops or riding their bikes to school.

We are also continuing to step up speed enforcement in our school zones. We are literally telling you where we will be running enforcement. You really can’t ask for a better warning than that!

Leave earlier, slow down, and help everyone get where they are going safely.

There’s a lot more to becoming a police officer than learning how to handle calls for service.

Throughout our Field Training Program, new officers are exposed to the many different responsibilities, specialized units, and resources that are part of modern policing.

Today, Officer DiLorenzo and Sergeant Wandell spent some time with Officers Jack Rooney and Karl Saied, introducing them to the Wilmington Police Department’s Drone Unit. They demonstrated the capabilities of our drones and discussed how this technology can assist officers during search and rescue operations, critical incidents, crash and crime scene documentation, and other situations where having a view from above can make a difference.

It’s all part of preparing our newest officers by giving them a better understanding of the tools and resources available to help them safely and effectively serve our community.
