With 7 acres of public gardens, we offer a place to enjoy nature while learning about the best plant species for our area. The Arboretum is committed to sustainable practices. We do have a RO water bottle filler station and encourage all visitors to bring a refillable bottle.

Shopping Day spotlight: The Garden Shop on Moss 🌿

On Saturday, September 19, the Garden Shop on Moss joins us for Cape Fear Native Plant Festival Shopping Day — stop by 1942 Moss Street to browse their selection and talk natives with the folks who grow them.

Other on site vendors include: Community Nursery, Sorrell's Lawn Care & Nursery, and NC Native Plant Society - Southeast Coast Chapter!

Their native plant pick? Southern Beardtongue (Penstemon australis) — a coastal plain native with tall spikes of tubular pink-purple flowers that native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds can't resist. It's happy in the sandy, well-drained soils many of us are already working with, and as Rebecca Patman put it, the foliage contrasts beautifully with everything around it. They've even got a hummingbird that comes back for it every year.

In the words of Alexandra at Shelton Herb Farm: "We love its graceful blue color and how it pops up along roadsides at about the same time as Goldenrod blooms. It is a wonderful mid-height ground cover for part-sun locations and spreads readily by runners, rhizomes, and seed. We use it to fill in space between taller natives to help with w**d control and add a pop of color in the fall."
