It was a pleasure co-hosting A Conversation with the Mayor with Precincts H02, H04, and H05. Thanks to Mayor Bill Saffo and all those who attended. It was a great opportunity for voters to hear directly from Mayor Saffo and ask questions about issues important to them.

Election day is right around the corner! If you have questions or want to get involved with helping elect our democratic candidates reach out to us or the New Hanover County Democratic Party.

Chakema Clinton-Quintana is an accomplished leader in inclusive economic development, community advocacy, and small-business empowerment. She currently serves as Director of Channel, Live Oak Bank’s inclusive small-business center in Wilmington, NC, where she has shaped a supportive ecosystem for minority entrepreneurs, women, veterans, and other under-represented groups.

Before leading Channel—which was launched in 2021—Chakema was at Live Oak Bank, applying her extensive background in banking and regulatory compliance. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and has over two decades of financial and compliance expertise. Under her leadership, Channel has served hundreds of entrepreneurs, building trust with the community through hands-on coaching, networking, micro-loans, SBA financing, and workshops—all free to participants. She champions empathy, authenticity, and inclusivity as central values of her work ethos.

Chakema plays an active role in civic leadership and volunteerism. She sits on the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce board, the Commission for African American History, and leads as Board Chair of the OOPS Foundation. She also serves as Treasurer of Voyage of Wilmington and volunteers with Prospera NC, supporting grant initiatives for underserved entrepreneurs.

An alumna of Leadership Wilmington (2022) and Leadership for Inclusive Communities (2024), a finalist in WILMA’s 2021 Women to Watch, she has been honored as a WilmingtonBiz Top 100 Connector for four consecutive years (2021–2024), earned the 2022 New Hanover County Equity Award for Business, and received the James Fullwood Award for her community impact.

Chakema is also a proud member of Beta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, and balances her professional drive with a fulfilling personal life—she’s a mother of four and grandmother of four.

Congratulations, Chakema, and thank you for all that you do for our community.

Many thanks to those who liked and shared our previous post regarding the showers and those who continue to work so hard in this community to support the unhoused. We appreciate the show of support for Sokoto House and welcome conversations about ways that we can provide assistance to those who remain unsheltered and often times, discarded in the city of Wilmington. Our goal is to empower those individuals as opposed to criminalizing poverty. Meaningful, solution focused dialogue is how we do that. We also applaud and lift up our community partners who are doing similar work and making strides in this area as well. Your work does not go unnoticed.

In addition to the previously mentioned initiative…we also want to showcase our upcoming Completely Free Community Market. These markets were originally a vision of the lowercase leaders on how to serve and elevate the community from within the community by offering an opportunity for people to share resources. You will find clothing, toys, school supplies, furniture, housewares, etc. at each of these markets. Every time donations are received we are pleasantly surprised at the things that people are willing to part with and share with their neighbors. It has turned into something so much larger as our community has learned additional ways to come together through this market. Not only does the market provide specific items that you may be looking for, it also provides ways to connect with your neighbors as well. These markets are carefully planned to coincide with specific times when the community is most in need. Our next market will be on September 20 and 21, to align with the beginning of the traditional school calendar, so that the community can take full advantage of this resource during that time. At a time when so many resources are being eliminated in our community due to budget cuts and policy changes…this is a valuable asset and yet another one that Sokoto House, and the lowercase leaders do not benefit from financially. It is 100% a volunteer initiative to do good works in the community and answer the call of an identified need. That being said, we all benefit from this event in terms of investing in our community.

Put this date on your calendar and know that all are welcome that come out with a willingness to give and take with good intentions.
