One month to go, and tickets are officially on sale!

Good Neighbors Gathering is just one month away, and we’re getting ready for an evening of good food, good company, and a community coming together for a good cause.

Join us Friday, October 2, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Azalea Station for our annual gathering featuring delicious local food, great music, drinks, auction items, and plenty of time to connect with friends and neighbors.

And while the evening is something to look forward to, what your ticket supports is what makes it meaningful.

Proceeds benefit Good Shepherd Center’s rehousing programs, helping adults and children in crisis move from homelessness into safe, stable housing and supporting them along the way.

So grab your friends, mark your calendar, and come gather with us.

We’re celebrating a big win for one of our longtime community partners!

Cape Fear Clinic has been named the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics’ Member Organization of the Year! 🎉

This national recognition celebrates Cape Fear Clinic’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible, compassionate, and connected, and we’re especially proud to see their community partnership model recognized.

Through their partnership with Good Shepherd Center, Cape Fear Clinic brings primary medical care, chronic disease management, pharmacy services, and care coordination directly to neighbors experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

Having care available in a familiar setting can remove some of the barriers that make healthcare difficult to access. And importantly, that relationship can continue after someone leaves our shelter. Patients who connect with Cape Fear Clinic through Good Shepherd can continue receiving care through the Clinic even after they've transitioned back to housing.

We’re grateful to the Cape Fear Clinic team for being such an important part of the care our neighbors receive and for showing what’s possible when community organizations work together.

80 apartments. 80 front doors. 80 places to call home.

As Supportive Housing Week comes to a close, we are celebrating what supportive housing makes possible for chronically homeless individuals with significant disabilities.

Across SECU The Sparrow, SECU Lakeside Reserve, and the Sgt. Eugene Ashley Center, Good Shepherd provides 80 supportive housing apartments. Each resident has an affordable apartment of their own, along with case management and supportive services that help them remain housed and work toward the life they want to build.

Earlier this year, SECU The Sparrow added 32 new supportive housing apartments to our community. SECU Lakeside Reserve provides 40 one-bedroom apartments, and the Sgt. Eugene Ashley Center includes eight supportive housing apartments for men.

The Ashley Center also provides short-term Bridge Housing, meals, transportation, case management, peer support, and other resources for homeless Veterans working toward housing. Since the program began in 2001, 92% of participating Veterans have returned to permanent housing.

But the impact of supportive housing cannot be measured in apartments alone.
It is having a safe place to keep medications. A kitchen of your own. A front door you can close at the end of the day. A case manager who knows your goals and is there when challenges arise.

It is the stability to care for your health, establish daily routines, and begin planning for the future.

Supportive Housing Week may be ending, but this work continues every day.
Because the goal has never been simply to move someone indoors.

There's something powerful about a fresh coat of paint.

Recently, one of our supportive housing communities, SECU Lakeside Reserve, got a little refresh, helping brighten and care for a place that 40 of our formerly chronically homeless neighbors call home.

At Good Shepherd Center, we believe housing is about more than simply having a roof overhead. Everyone deserves a home that is safe, welcoming, well-maintained, and cared for.

Supportive housing can and should be attractive and inviting. It should look like home.

That's why upkeep matters. It's about creating spaces where people can feel proud of where they live, feel welcomed when they walk through the door, and know that their home is worth investing in.

We're grateful to everyone who helped give SECU Lakeside a fresh look and, in the process, helped reinforce what we believe housing should be about: stability, dignity, and a place you can be proud to call home.

What does a typical day at our Day Shelter look like?

For many guests, it’s the place where they can come in out of the weather, take a deep breath, connect with resources, and begin working toward what’s next.

Throughout the day, guests can receive healthcare through our partnership with Cape Fear Clinic, meet with case managers, search for housing and employment opportunities, make phone calls and receive mail, enjoy a nutritious meal at our Soup Kitchen, access clean drinking water, and find a welcoming space where they’re treated with dignity and compassion.

Every conversation, every appointment, and every connection is part of something bigger.

Because at Good Shepherd Center, shelter is about more than meeting today’s needs. It’s about helping our neighbors build a foundation for tomorrow.

📦 Ever wondered where your donation goes?

You drop it off at Good Shepherd Center. Then what? Your donation begins a journey.

It arrives, gets sorted by our team, is organized with other supplies, and eventually reaches a neighbor who needs it.

What may feel like a simple bag of toiletries, a case of water, or a box of supplies can become something much more meaningful: a resource that helps someone feel cared for, supported, and prepared for the day ahead.

So the next time you make a donation, know that it doesn't simply sit on a shelf. There's a whole community behind it, helping make sure it gets where it's needed most.

This week, we're proud to spotlight Las Amigas, Incorporated Southeast Region, a dedicated group of volunteers who consistently bring energy, kindness, and heart to Good Shepherd Center.

During their most recent volunteer shift, Las Amigas also brought us a generous donation of bottled water, helping ensure our neighbors have access to one of our most needed resources during these hot summer months.

Their partnership is a wonderful reminder that making a difference can take many forms. Sometimes it's serving a meal. Sometimes it's bringing much-needed supplies. Most often, it's showing up with a caring heart and a commitment to your community.

For families experiencing homelessness, the start of a new school year can bring added uncertainty. When you're worried about where you'll sleep or how you'll meet your family's basic needs, it's difficult to focus on homework, routines, and all the moments that help children learn and grow.

The impact extends far beyond the classroom. Across the United States, 60% of students experiencing homelessness are chronically absent from school, homeless students have a 50% higher dropout rate than their housed peers, and half struggle with hunger, making it harder to concentrate and succeed in class.

A stable home provides so much more than four walls and a roof. It creates the foundation for learning, health, and opportunity. It's where children can rest, families can establish routines, and parents can focus on building a brighter future.

At Good Shepherd Center, we're committed to helping individuals and families move beyond homelessness and toward lasting stability because every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive with the security of a place to call home.
