We are excited to welcome the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, to the Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC)! 🌍

Located in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, the university is integrating into undergraduate education by adding a Green Chemistry module to its Environmental Chemistry course.

Through its Chemistry Bachelor of Science and Industrial Chemistry Bachelor of Science programs, students will build a foundation in the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, sustainable lab practices, renewable feedstocks, waste minimization, and safer chemical processes.

As a GCC signer, the university is working to strengthen staff training, expand green chemistry into more courses, and support undergraduate research on green synthesis, renewable resources, and environmental sustainability. 👏 https://buff.ly/Iu5aavo

The eighth principle of , “Reduce Derivatives,” states that unnecessary derivatization, including blocking groups, protection and deprotection, or temporary modification of physical or chemical processes, should be avoided.

This principle asks chemists to consider if extra steps are truly needed. Derivatization requires additional reagents, solvents, energy, and purification, and generates more waste.

Principle eight encourages chemists to design reactions as direct as possible. For students, this reinforces an important idea: greener chemistry seeks simpler pathways that reduce unnecessary materials, hazards, and steps.
