Safety starts long before a boat leaves the dock.

The Wilmington District Motorboat Program trains and licenses personnel operating government vessels across the District, ensuring they meet U.S. Army Corps of Engineers policy, U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and state boating laws.

Before earning a license, operators complete classroom instruction, written and practical exams, and in-water safety testing—including a 100-yard swim while wearing a personal flotation device and demonstrating self-rescue back into the vessel.

Behind every mission on the water is a team of dedicated instructors and licensing examiners committed to building a culture of professionalism, accountability, and safety.

Public input helps inform the future management of North Carolina's federal navigation channels.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District hosted a public scoping meeting June 9 in Wilmington, North Carolina, as part of the Supplemental Analysis of the Wilmington Harbor Operations and Maintenance Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The purpose of the meeting was to gather public input as the Corps evaluates long-term strategies for maintaining the existing federal navigation channels while continuing to protect environmental resources. The Supplemental Analysis will examine how routine operations and maintenance dredging activities may affect the environment and identify opportunities to improve flexibility in dredging schedules while supporting habitat and wildlife protection.
Corps representatives provided information on the proposed action and alternatives under consideration and received feedback from community members to help inform the environmental review process.
This effort focuses on the maintenance of existing federal navigation channels and is separate from any studies related to channel deepening or expansion.

🚢 Keeping a vital Outer Banks transportation route open and accessible.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, and contractor Cottrell Contracting Corporation are conducting maintenance dredging in Hatteras Sloop North Channel to help maintain safe and reliable navigation for ferry traffic between Hatteras and Ocracoke.

Approximately 50,000 cubic yards of shoaled material will be removed during this effort. The project includes both federally funded channel maintenance and additional non-federal channel widening work supported through state and local partnerships.

To minimize impacts to ferry operations, dredging is being conducted overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in coordination with the North Carolina Ferry Division. Work is expected to continue through June 20.

This effort helps support continued access for residents, visitors, businesses and emergency services that rely on one of North Carolina's most important ferry routes.

Mariners are reminded to monitor Notices to Mariners, follow posted warnings, reduce speed when passing dredging operations, and monitor VHF channels 13 and 16 when operating near work areas.

IN THE NEWS

The Wilmington StarNews recently highlighted a unique partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, and The Nature Conservancy that is helping improve fish passage and water quality throughout the Cape Fear River Basin.

Through the Sustainable Rivers Program, USACE coordinates strategic water releases from Jordan Lake to support migratory fish species as they move upstream to spawn. These releases can also help reduce the conditions that contribute to harmful algal blooms, improving the overall health of the river system.

The story features insights from Ashley Hatchell, hydraulic engineer with the Wilmington District, and Dr. Julie DeMeester of The Nature Conservancy.

We certainly welcomed the recent rainfall this past week, but many lakes across North Carolina and Virginia remain below normal levels.

If you’re heading out on the water this weekend, plan ahead and stay aware of current conditions. Even when lake levels appear normal, water safety should always remain a top priority.

⚠️ One step can change everything.
Natural shorelines can hide sudden drop-offs, unstable footing, and other dangerous hazards. When swimming or wading from shore, always wear a life jacket.

⚠️ A dive can ruin the day.
Changing water levels may conceal submerged hazards like rocks, stumps, and debris just below the surface. Never dive or jump into unfamiliar water — always enter feet first.

⚠️ Stay alert around boats and docks.
Swimming near boat ramps, docks, or operating vessels can be extremely dangerous. Boat operators may not see swimmers, and running engines create serious carbon monoxide hazards.

Current lake levels can be found here:

Stay safe and recreate responsibly this weekend.
