As part of the ongoing implementation of North Carolina’s Strategic Plan for Achieving Educational Excellence, Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green announced the creation of the North Carolina Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council.
The Council is a key action item under Pillar 3 of the strategic plan, which focuses on strengthening parent, family, and community engagement. It will bring together parent leaders from across the state, with representation aligned to each of the State Board of Education’s eight regions. For purposes of this initiative, the term “parent” is intended to be inclusive of all primary caregivers, including guardians and other family members who play a central role in a child’s education.
Applications must be submitted by September 15, 2026.
The Parent Advisory Council is designed to elevate informed family voice and ensure that those closest to students have meaningful opportunities to provide feedback on the implementation of key educational priorities. Members will serve two-year terms, engage with Department of Public Instruction presentations, share perspectives from their communities, and help identify both opportunities and challenges facing public education.
The Council is expected to meet quarterly, with most meetings conducted virtually and one in-person meeting hosted annually by the Superintendent at the Department of Public Instruction.
The creation of the Council reflects a commitment to strengthening the partnership between families, schools, and the state education agency. By creating a formal structure for family input, North Carolina is taking another step toward ensuring that the voices of parents and caregivers help shape the future of public education.
