Today, we remember Specialist Cody L. Wentz of Williston, North Dakota, who gave his life in service to our nation during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Cody served with Company A, 141st Engineer Battalion, North Dakota Army National Guard. On November 4, 2004, at just 21 years old, he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle while on patrol in Iraq.

A proud member of the Williston community, Cody was known for his determination, his love of weightlifting, and his passion for working on old cars.

As Memorial Day approaches, we honor Specialist Cody L. Wentz and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage, their stories, and their legacy will never be forgotten.

🇺🇸 “Freedom is never free.” 🇺🇸

We lost another giant in our family, our community, and our Legion. Lance Renville.

Lance was more than a Marine and Legionnaire — he was a brother to many and a friend to all. A man who led with strength, lived with integrity, and gave of himself without hesitation. His presence could light up a room, his loyalty never wavered, and his impact on those around him will never be forgotten.

For so many of us, Lance wasn’t just someone we knew… he was someone we counted on. Through the good times, the hard times, the laughter, and the service to others, he was always there.

The shoes he leaves behind will be impossible to completely fill, but the legacy he built will continue to guide us. Through the lives he touched, the friendships he forged, and the example he set, Lance will always remain with us.

Rest easy, Marine.
Your watch may be over, but your memory will stand forever.

Semper Fidelis, brother. 🇺🇸

History was made this weekend for one small town girl from Williston on the National American Legion stage in Michigan for the American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Jayla Roberts is the first student from Williston High School to win at the local post level, the District AND Western Region followed by the North Dakota State contest. This allowed her to represent North Dakota at the 2026 National contest in Hillsdale, Michigan.

This is a big milestone for both Williston High School and Post 37. No one from Williston has ever made it this far in the contest before and we are ecstatic to announce that Jayla also was a semi-finalist!!

We are so proud of her accomplishment and representing Williston and North Dakota so gracefully! We also would like to extend a HUGE congratulations to Juliet Hetzel of Colorado who took home the grand prize and $25,000 in scholarship funds!

Until next year, we can’t wait to see who represents North Dakota next!

A special thanks to the teachers and mentors who help students like Jayla achieve successes just like this. A special mention goes out to Kelly Bristow and Chris Mack of Williston.
