Tip Tuesday: What’s the Difference Between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

The best way to wrap up Tip Tuesday? Come out on the other end a little more informed.

Throughout Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’ve shared tips to support memory and brain health. This week, we’re taking a closer look at an important question: Are Alzheimer’s and dementia the same thing?

According to a Hartford HealthCare Health News Hub article medically reviewed by Dr. Mark Alberts, they are related, but they are not the same.

Dementia is a term for a group of symptoms that can affect thinking, reasoning and memory. Alzheimer’s disease is one cause of dementia, and the most common.

Understanding the difference matters because identifying the cause of cognitive changes can help guide appropriate care and treatment.

Learn the key differences and know when it may be time to talk with a doctor.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

A time to encourage open conversations about mental health, recognize when someone may be struggling and remind one another that support is available.

In this video, Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging Resource Coordinators Melissa Garthwait and Michelle Lavoie discuss the importance of connection and introduce QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer, an evidence-based su***de prevention training that teaches people how to recognize warning signs, ask directly about su***de, encourage help-seeking and connect someone with appropriate resources.

One conversation can make a difference. Listen without judgment, reach out and help connect those who may be struggling with support.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.

Our team wore royal blue yesterday to recognize **Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Awareness Day** and show support for the individuals and families living with RLS.

RLS affects an estimated 7–8% of the population and remains a condition that is often underrecognized.

This year, we’re also celebrating an important milestone: the **Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute’s Chase Family Movement Disorders Center** has been recognized by the **Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation as an RLS Quality Care Center** — one of just 17 centers internationally to receive this distinction.

Thank you to everyone who wore royal blue and helped raise awareness for RLS and the specialized care available to those living with the condition.

5 Ways to Talk to a Loved One About Dementia

Starting a conversation about changes in memory or thinking can feel difficult, but talking about concerns early can help families plan, seek support and make informed decisions together.

In this week’s Tip Tuesday, we’re sharing five tips from Angela Christie, a dementia specialist with Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, to help make these conversations more supportive:

Acknowledge your concerns

Talk about things early

Lead with reassurance

Plan what to say

Understand that your loved one may not recognize the changes

As part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, remember: The earlier you know, the more you can do. A dementia diagnosis matters.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to raise awareness, challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and highlight the importance of early diagnosis.

Recognizing changes in memory, thinking or daily activities and starting a conversation with a health care professional can be an important first step. A diagnosis can help individuals and families better understand what they’re experiencing and connect with available care, support and treatment options.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s encourage open conversations, support those affected by dementia and remember that knowing sooner can help you do more.

09/21/2026

Today, we remember those we’ve lost to Alzheimer’s disease, honor those living with the disease, and stand alongside the families, caregivers and communities supporting them.

Together, we can raise awareness, support research and move closer to a future without Alzheimer’s.

Today, we remember. Together, we hope. Together, we move forward.
