Main-Transit Fire Department The Main-Transit Fire Department is a 100% Volunteer Organization that has been proudly serving the Town of Amherst (NY) since 1936.

Founded in 1936 the Main-Transit Fire Department has been serving the town of Amherst, New York in Emergency Medical, Fire and Motor Vehicle Rescue Services. The Main-Transit Fire Department is a 100% volunteer organization that serves a district of approximately 5.2 square miles. We also work with many other neighboring departments when a F.A.S.T Team or Mutual Aid is needed. The Main-Transit Fire Department consists of a membership of over 85 Active Members, an Auxiliary, an Exempt Association, and an Explorers Post with 25 members. All active members are required to have passed New York State certified courses in firefighting, and maintain First Aid certifications. Many members are Certified First Responders, along with some Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics.

Tuesday night your Main-Transit firefighters discussed elevator operations as well as a variety of beginner firefighting basics. The drill was led by Captain Jack Leising and MTFD Safety Officer / Buffalo Fireman Chris Feuz. 🚒🔥

For the first half of drill, firefighters learned how to operate an elevator in an emergency and practice manually opening the doors. For the second half of drill, firefighters were able to practice opening hydrants, pump operations, dragging hose lines and more. Last week, MTFD first responders practiced responding to medical emergencies that may arise in athletic environments. Williamsville South High School athletic trainer Nick Darling taught about common athletic injuries, and gave our personnel the opportunity to practice properly removing a football helmet and pads from a player with a suspected neck injury. Responders then travelled to Stumpf's Gymnastics Center to learn about the challenges of removing an injured athlete from a foam pit.
