Field day wrap up.

Where to begin. It was a year of up and downs. We had good times and some setbacks. Overall things were pretty good.

We would like to thank all of you that supported us and attended this event, we hope you had a fun time, and will come back next year. We understand that the economy is not the best so spending money with us can be difficult, and that is shown in our deposits. We try to make our event affordable for families of all sizes and financial means, while giving you a quality product and experience. Without your attendance and support the field days would not be successful and budgeting for the FD would be very difficult.

We greatly appreciate the business that supported us in many ways, and I won't attempt to name them all. Thank you to all the businesses that donated to our booster prizes; the bike giveaway; closing your business early; suppliers that gave us discounts or donations; sponsored portions of our schedule; provided parts and services for our equipment to ensure a smooth event; and more.
Thank you also to the individuals that donated to the bike giveaway or made cash donations. Without you we could not provide this giveaway for the children of our community.

Of course, the rain had to make its yearly appearance at our field days, and unfortunately during the setup and beginning of our parade. Thank you to the parade participants that toughed it out and make our parade what it is. Thanks also to the spectators that stuck around to watch the parade, then come to the field afterwords.

Our members put in a long hard week of preparations, clean-up and operating the event. The number of volunteer hours is unbelievable and difficult to track because so many things happen throughout the year, months and days leading up to it.
Speaking of volunteers, we could not do this with just the members of our department. There are so many non-fire department members that put in hours from a couple to three full days. There were also members from other volunteer fire departments that took time to assist us in any way they could. Without you this would all be so much more difficult and demanding for our own members.

After the long hard week and with only a couple of hours rest, we continued to do what we do all year long and responded to a 2-alarm structure fire (see related post).

To the WFD members that put in weeks/months of work down to a couple of hours of work, THANK YOU. An extra special thanks to our event chairperson and all the stand chairs, your leadership, the example you set and the work environment you bring make this event successful. You all are the heart and soul of the department, and your time and sacrifice are noticed. Now go get some well-deserved rest before the pager goes off again... and it is going off again right now, I have to run.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

This morning at 0409 hours the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire with flames and smoke showing. This was just a short 2-3 hours after many of our members left the field day grounds after finishing our Annual Fielddays and completing our Saturday Night Clean up tasks. Altmar Volunteer Fire Department, Orwell Fire Company, West Amboy Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. and Camden Vol Fire Dept were also activated Automatic Mutual Aid by Oswego County 911.
West Amboy Chief 2901 arrived 1st on scene and reported a fully involved residential fire. Williamstown Chiefs 3001 and 3002 arrived shortly after. A second alarm was requested due to the extent of the fire, and it was extending to a nearby garage. This included additional resources from Camden to standby our station and Redfield Volunteer Fire Company, Inc and Auxiliary and Northern Oswego County Ambulance to the scene. There was also a request for the Oswego County Fire Investigation team and Fire coordinators. New York State Police and Oswego County Sheriff's Office were also on scene assisting with the investigation and traffic control. National Grid was called to disconnect the power lines and American Red Cross was notified to assist the occupants. It was quickly determined that the homeowners were not home at the time of the fire and were safe. There were no injuries reported during the fire to civilians or first responders. There were some family pets that perished in the fire. Our thoughts are with the homeowners, Williamstown business - Rusty Roof & Bucks have volunteered to be drop of points for donations to the family.

Williamstown units were on scene for 5 hours 15 minutes, once back at the station and with all apparatus, the members went directly out to the field to finish our Field Day clean up. We finished that detail around 1130.

We would like to thank Williamstown Circle K for donating much needed coffee and drinks.

All agencies worked well together, and we thank everyone for their assistance with this fire. Apologies to any agency missing in the listing above.

Once again, the members of WFD show our dedication to protecting Williamstown and why we are all so proud to be members of our organization.

You can turn this sucker off.

Our Chief is right, all the fire departments in the county need help. We’ve heard all the excuses. I can’t commit to (fill in the blank), I’m not always available, I’m too young/old, I don’t know anything about it. They are just excuses. We are all volunteers. We can when we can and we can’t when we can’t.

This is an incredible job you get paid for in ways that aren’t money. If you’ve ever thought about it, contact the VFD in your area. The hardest part, is walking through that station door the first time.

We all live in the communities we serve. How can you make a difference?

Every fire department across the country needs help.
