This morning I attended the 9/11 Memorial Service at Williamston Fire/Rescue/EMS. It was a very touching service commemorating the 25 years since those tragic events. I look back over those years and the one thing that touches me the most is the America we lived in on 9/12. I pray that we never lose sight of the good that came from such awful events. As the old song says "Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together. Try to love one another right now."

Interested in learning how Local Government works? Martin County will be holding it's first ever Citizen's Academy in October. There are 6 sessions total being held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:30. These sessions are free to the public, but Julia asks that you do submit an application. Applications will be accepted August 1, 2026- September 1, 2026. Seating will be limited and participants will be chosen in the order in which applications are received.

Scam Alert

SCAM ALERT
The Martin County Sheriff's Office has begun receiving reports from family members of inmates who were being housed at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail. Individuals are contacting families and falsely claiming that their loved one can be released on electronic monitoring if an immediate payment is made.

This is a scam.

At this time, neither the Martin County Sheriff's Office nor the Bertie County Sheriff's Office is placing inmates on electronic monitoring for release.

If you receive a phone call, text message, or email requesting payment to secure the release of an inmate, do not send money under any circumstances. Scammers often request payment through electronic money transfer services, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other untraceable methods.
If you receive one of these calls:

Do not provide any personal or financial information.
Do not send money.
Hang up immediately.
Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.

Please help us protect our community by sharing this information with your family and friends. Remaining informed is one of the best ways to prevent becoming the victim of a scam.

Funeral Arrangements for Sergeant Shaun Cratt

The funeral arrangements for Sgt. Shaun Cratt will be as follows:

Friday June 26th, 2026; visitation will be at Rose of Sharon Original Free Will Baptist Church located at 8000 Bear Grass Road, Bear Grass, NC.

Visitation will be from 2:00pm until 3:45pm. The funeral will begin at 4:00pm officiated by Pastor Clifford Britton.

Burial will follow immediately at the Cratt Family Cemetery located on Cratt Road.

The Martin County Register of Deeds Office extends our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Sergeant Shaun Cratt of the Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Today, our community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant who faithfully answered the call to protect and serve. Sergeant Cratt's commitment, courage, and service to the citizens of Martin County will not be forgotten.

We ask everyone to keep his loved ones, fellow deputies, and the entire Martin County Sheriff's Office family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May they find strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead as they honor his life and legacy.
