A friendly reminder that the burn ban remains in place even though we experienced rainfall yesterday and last night.

If you have any questions please contact the NC Forest Service or contact our department, and we will connect you with our forest service partners.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Chief Roy Spell, certainly was no stranger in our department, and a lifelong supporter of the NC fire service.

Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers over the coming days and weeks.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of former Fire Chief Roy S. Spell.

Chief Spell dedicated his life to serving others through the fire service, his faith, his family, and his community. His leadership shaped not only our department but fire departments across North Carolina. He served with honor as Fire Chief of the Greenville Fire Department and Elizabeth City Fire Department, as well as Deputy Chief of the Wilson Fire Department, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, strength, and service that will not be forgotten.

Those who had the privilege of working alongside Chief Spell knew him as a steady leader, a mentor, and a man who truly cared for his firefighters and his community. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Spell family and all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at L.N. Forbes Original Free Will Tabernacle in Wilson, North Carolina. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

A public visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Wilson.

Please keep the Spell family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
