We also have been getting calls here at communications in reference to Mark Chesson and Sons. Please know that this is a total scam and not at all legitimate.

Public Notice from Chief Beth Coltrain Regarding a Scam

The Williamston Police Department would like to make the public aware of a recent scam that has been reported to our department.

We have received multiple reports of individuals being contacted by scammers posing as Mark Chesson and Sons, a local business that has recently closed. The scammers are advertising equipment for sale and directing potential buyers to what appears to be a legitimate website, markchesson.com. In some cases, the phone number (252-618-1566) associated with the business has even been altered online to make the scam appear credible.

At this time, it is believed that the individuals responsible for this scam are operating from overseas.

We strongly urge citizens to use caution when making purchases online or conducting business with companies that may no longer be operating. Please take the following precautions:

• Verify that the business is still active and legitimate through trusted sources
• Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true
• Avoid sending money electronically or through non-secure payment methods
• When possible, conduct transactions in person and inspect items before purchase

If you have been contacted by someone claiming to represent Mark Chesson and Sons, or if you believe you may have been a victim of this scam, please contact the Williamston Police Department at 252-792-2124.

We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Sharing this information may help prevent others in our community from becoming victims.

Let’s take a moment to thank the one’s who send the help. Who answer your phone calls. Who are there for you, in your worst or most embarrassing moments, without a second of judgement. Who sacrifice their nights/weekends/holidays etc.

The field in its entirety is a thankless job. Whether it’s a paid full time job or just a volunteer for the love of helping your community.

But for this moment I’d like to thank our dispatchers of Martin County! Past and present.

Promise it’s more than just answering the phone 😉

Happy Telecommunicator Week! We appreciate all of you 🥳
