10/17/26 @ 730AM –Conditions quickly deteriorate today behind a cold front that pushes offshore this morning. Expect a long duration of hazardous marine/coastal impacts and gusty winds across ENC as a Nor’easter develops off the coast. Wind advisories will be in effect across Carteret, Dare, and Hyde Counties starting this afternoon.

Record or near-record heat continues today, then a strong cold front brings widespread rain on Saturday. Strong N to NE winds develop behind the front and developing offshore low this weekend, which could bring some coastal impacts.

A strong cold front moving through North Carolina Friday into Saturday will increase the chance of gusty winds and scattered showers statewide.

Friday may reach near record or record high temperatures before the strong cold front moves through the region this afternoon.

A low‑pressure system forming offshore this weekend could bring rough marine conditions. Eastern NC may see minor to moderate coastal impacts.

Earlier this week Director Griffin and Deputy Director Bryant attended the 60th annual North Carolina Emergency Management Association conference held in Greenville.

This annual event allows us to meet with colleagues from across the state, in multiple disciplines to network and learn. Always a great time catching up with those we haven’t seen in a while, as well as making new connections to better serve the citizens of Martin County.

Day 5: Find the Fire Hazards
On the last day of fire prevention week, look around and ask yourself: What could start a fire?

Parents and educators, here are 6 quick signs you should look for when fireproofing a home:

• Extension cords: Are they damaged, overloaded, or being used where they shouldn't be?
• Charging devices: Are phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, or other devices charging safely?
• Cooking: Are towels, paper products, or other things that can burn too close to the stove?
• Heating equipment: Are heaters kept away from furniture, curtains, and other things that can burn?
• Candles: Are they being used safely and kept away from anything that can burn?
• A few minutes spent identifying hazards can help prevent a fire before it starts.

Additionally, teach others to always keep their doors closed. Closing your bedroom door while you sleep can help slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving you more time to escape.

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, don't just talk about fire safety. Take Action, protect your home, and protect your family!
