: When Becht and Four Mile Were Elementary Schools

Long before it was Donald E. Schick Elementary School, our elementary students were spread across two schools: J. George Becht School and Four Mile Elementary School.

Built around 1929, Becht served generations of Lancers before closing its doors as an elementary school in 2005. That year, Becht and Four Mile came together to create the single K-5 elementary school we know today as Donald E. Schick Elementary School.

But the memories didn't disappear.

From Halloween parades and Thanksgiving musicals with construction paper Pilgrim hats to Four Mile science fairs and the twisty yellow slide at Becht — famous for delivering quite the static shock at times — these photos offer a glimpse of elementary school life from another era.

Today's TBT features a few photos from the 1953-54 school year at Becht, along with snapshots from both Becht and Four Mile featured in the 1990-91 yearbook.

Becht was ultimately demolished in 2018, and the property was redeveloped as what is now Beckett Estates.

🎉 Congratulations to Bella, a fifth-grade student at Donald E. Schick Elementary, who was recognized earlier this summer at a Crosscutters Baseball game for reading 10 chapter books as part of the Crosscutters Grand Slam Reading Program!

Bella celebrated her accomplishment on the field, where she received a Chromebook and headphones — and even had the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch!

The Grand Slam Reading Program, sponsored by EQT Corporation, encourages elementary students throughout the region to keep reading during the summer while giving students the opportunity to enjoy a Crosscutters game with their families.

Way to go, Bella! 📖⚾

📚 Today is World Literacy Day!

In honor of the day, we’re revisiting a story from the summer edition of “Lancer Life” highlighting the work happening in our elementary classrooms to help our youngest Lancers become stronger, more confident readers.

Through Enhanced Core Reading Instruction (ECRI), teachers are providing students with targeted opportunities to strengthen their reading skills — building a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning. 📖
