The Trust is privileged to work alongside not only our National Park Service partners, but also with a dedicated and engaged Board of Directors. Mary Ann Fisher has served on the Trust’s Board since July 2020. She is also on the Trust’s Development Committee and is a William O. Douglas Society Member. She shares her wonderful lifelong connection to the C&O Canal and how she got involved with the Trust:
“The C&O Canal has been part of my life since childhood: riding the mule barge in Georgetown, canoeing at Swains Lock, and finding tadpoles along widewater. I still remember greeting my mother after her hike from Cumberland to Georgetown celebrating the canal’s 1971 induction into the U.S. National Park System.
Years later, I chose to live within walking distance of the canal. It became a respite from modern life — a place to walk, run, bike, and enjoy nature year-round. Over time, I saw meaningful improvements: restored sections of the towpath, rehabilitated lockhouses, and invasive species removal. This was the work of the C&O Canal Trust.
Today, the Trust’s impact extends beyond preservation to education, conservation, and community stewardship alongside the National Park Service. I feel fortunate to witness the amazing improvements along the canal led by Trust in partnership with the NPS. Join me in supporting this National Treasure through a gift to the C&O Canal Trust!”
As we wrap up the last few weeks of our Spring Giving Campaign, we invite you to join Mary Ann in helping the Trust increase critical financial support for the programs and initiatives essential to preserving and protecting this park as a safe and accessible space for all who seek to enjoy it. As an added bonus, you can secure a carabiner camp mug with a new monthly gift of $25 or more, or one-time gifts of $250 or more! Make a gift today! ! 🌱 CanalTrust.org/Give
