First-Degree Murder Conviction Secured Following Three-Day Jury Trial
On June 12, 2025, following a three-day jury trial, Lee Rondell Richardson, 43, was convicted of first-degree murder in the September 2022 killing of Mr. Alfred Johnson. This conviction stems from a thorough investigation by our officers, in coordination with the Williamsburg/James City County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
On September 13, 2022, our Patrol officers responded to the 2600 block of Chickahominy Road for a report of a male with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers located 38-year-old Alfred Johnson, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. Our Criminal Investigations Unit took over the case and quickly began identifying leads.
Within days, detectives developed Lee Richardson as a primary suspect. On September 22, 2022, information indicated that Richardson was in Newport News, and a coordinated surveillance effort was executed with assistance from the Newport News Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service. Richardson was taken into custody, transported to the Law Enforcement Center, and subsequently charged following an interview with detectives.
After continued investigation and collaboration with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the case proceeded to trial on June 10, 2025. On June 12, the jury found Richardson guilty of the following:
• First-Degree Murder (§ 18.2-32)
• Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony (§ 18.2-53.1)
Richardson remains incarcerated at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. Sentencing is scheduled for September 15, 2025.
We commend the officers, investigators, partner agencies, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney's Office who contributed to this case and achieved this conviction. We hope this conviction brings justice to the family of Mr. Johnson and all affected by his loss.
