Our Day Program, Arc of Abilities, continues to spend time every other week serving at Grove Christian Outreach Center. While during their volunteer time they assist with bagging canned and non-perishable goods to be distributed to neighbors who visit Grove, they wanted to take it one step further this summer with a canned food drive! Their first week of collection totaled 53 lbs. of donations, and they'll continue to collect through the end of the month. A huge shout out to our AoA crew for their dedication to serving the neighbors in Grove.

Bowling is back at The Arc of Greater Williamsburg! A crowd favorite, it's been so much fun to kick off this summer tradition as a great way to get active, beat the heat, and enjoy time together with our Arc family. Thanks to our friends at Bowlero for hosting us and we'll see everyone for round two in July!

One of our Arc family members, Mandi Morris, attended the Special Olympics Summer Games for Bowling in Richmond, Virginia. Mandi was one of the athletes in her group who won a Gold medal for Bowling, and we couldn't be more proud! Go, Mandi! 🎳

The Arc of Greater Williamsburg was the recent beneficiary of American Pride Automotive's "State Inspections for Our Community" program. Throughout April and May, American Pride set aside $5 from each state inspection performed across their six locations which resulted in a donation of $7,735 to support The Arc's programming for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc thanks American Pride for this gift and their continued support of area nonprofits.

For the last three summers, The Arc has been lucky to have wonderful interns join our team from William & Mary Research Scholars. This year, we're excited to welcome Brooke! Brooke has already been an amazing asset to our team, and we're positive of the difference she'll make this summer. Get to know Brooke more below!

Can you tell us a little about your internship?

My internship is with the William & Mary City Research Scholars Program. For the summer, I will be learning about the amazing work the Arc of Greater Williamsburg does throughout the community and conducting research on advocacy for adults with developmental disabilities. I am looking forward to connecting with everyone and experiencing the operations of a non-profit!

What is your year at W&M and what are some other things you're involved with there?

This upcoming academic year I will be a senior at William & Mary. Some of my involvements include playing the euphonium in the Wind Ensemble, working with the Public Policy Club as Co-President, and performing in my comedy group!

What are some things you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I love to read and bake (whether separately or simultaneously). Also, I love to do pretty much any outdoor activity!

What are you most excited about with this internship?

I am extremely excited to work with and serve adults with developmental disabilities in the Williamsburg area. This internship provides me with the opportunity to learn about advocacy, non-profit work, and the multitude of ways in which I can help others.

The Arc of Abilities Day Program visited the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg with Arc friend Christina Westenberger. Christina led our group on a visit themed around plants, featuring a read-a-loud, scavenger hunt, and craft. Each participant made seed necklaces featuring a bean that could be transplanted into soil once it sprouts! A huge thank you to Christina and the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg for being amazing hosts as always.

The Arc is thrilled to welcome Katie Swartz as our Day Program Coordinator. Katie has hit the ground running in her new position, and we are grateful for her energy and passion for The Arc's programming. Be sure to say hello when you see her around town with our amazing Day Program, Arc of Abilities.

From Katie's Arc of Abilities Blog Post Introduction:

My name is Katherine, but everyone calls me Katie. I am a Pennsylvania native who moved to Long Island, NY when I met my husband, and then we then moved to Williamsburg, VA. I have two children and a goldendoodle dog. I love being outdoors, hiking, biking, going to the beach, having dance parties, riding roller coasters, and reading.

While my degree is in physical therapy, my passion for helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities flourished while growing the special needs ministry at my home church over the past few years. While I love the ministry dearly and still continue to actively work and serve, I knew my heart was telling me it was time to pursue an even bigger calling. A friend who knew of my talents and gifts thought of me and sent the link to apply for the Day Program Coordinator position. Upon reading the requirements and checking all the boxes, my heart was filled with an immediate sense of peace and joy in knowing that this was the job for me.

The Day Program participants' level of support, kindness, and positivity has made this the best start of any job ever. From cheering me on after passing the van training, to writing me hand written cards, to starting off my day with a dance party, to showing me where things are stored, to offering me compliments and praise, and to always being willing to help, YOU ALL ROCK! Thanks for having me along for the journey. I am so excited and honored to be here.

One week since our morning moving and grooving with our friends at ! The event raised over $1,000 to support The Arc’s programming. It was a morning full of community and FUN, and we again thank Scott and the entire IBG team, all the instructors who made it possible, and all who showed up to dance together with us at this annual event. ❤️
