The roots of law enforcement in Williamsburg can be traced back to colonial times. The responsibility of reporting cases to the court was granted to the vestry when Bruton Parish was formed in 1674. When the city government of Williamsburg was established in 1722, they were empowered to make constables and execute all laws, statutes and ordinances. Law enforcement in Williamsburg evolved from the

colonial re-active form of enforcement, to the "Town Sergeant" concept in 1930, to the current pro-active, community-oriented Police Department of today. The Public Safety Communications Center dispatches Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services, utilizing the most modern E911 system currently available. On July 12, 1987, the Williamsburg Police Department became the 49th Law Enforcement Agency in the United States to be awarded Accreditation. The department has received re-accreditation status seven times: 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015. The latest on-site assessment and Commission review for re-accreditation will occur in 2018.

What better way to kick off summer break than with a cold popsicle and a visit from your local police officers?

On the last day of school, Officer Tara Jones, Officer Oliver Quetel, and MPO Herb Williams spent the afternoon visiting several apartment communities throughout Williamsburg, handing out popsicles to children and helping them celebrate the start of summer vacation. The officers enjoyed spending time with the kids, sharing smiles, and strengthening the positive relationships that make our community so special.

Imagine answering the phone and hearing the voice of a loved one in distress. They claim they've been arrested, injured, or stranded and need money immediately.

Before you act, stop and think.

Scammers are now using artificial intelligence to clone voices using audio found on social media and other online sources. These fake voices can sound surprisingly convincing and are designed to create panic so you'll send money without verifying the story.

⚠️ Common red flags:

Urgent requests for money

Demands for secrecy

Requests to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency

Pressure to act immediately

🔒 Protect yourself:

Create a secret family code word for emergencies

Hang up and call your loved one back using a known phone number

Verify the situation with another family member if possible

Be skeptical of unusual payment requests

All you have to do is complete a quick survey, and you'll receive a brand-new iPhone. To make things even more convincing, the survey includes a countdown timer urging you to act fast.

Unfortunately, it's a scam.

Cybercriminals often impersonate trusted brands to gain your confidence and pressure you into making quick decisions. These fake surveys are designed to steal your personal and financial information. After completing the survey, victims are often asked to pay a small "shipping" or "delivery" fee using a credit card—giving scammers exactly what they're after.

🔒 Protect yourself:

Be skeptical of unexpected prize notifications.

Remember: a free prize shouldn't require a payment.

Don't click links in suspicious emails.

Verify promotions by visiting the organization's official website or contacting them directly.

As excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scammers are creating fake websites designed to steal your money and account information.

These websites may look official and include realistic logos, photos, and online stores. But if the site only accepts payment through cryptocurrency or payment apps, that’s a major red flag.

⚠️ Some fake sites will even ask you to log in to your FIFA account before making a purchase. If you enter your credentials, scammers can steal your account and potentially access or resell legitimate tickets you already own.

🔒 Protect yourself:

Double-check website URLs before entering any information

Be cautious of websites that only accept crypto or payment apps

During the presentation, students learned about the juvenile justice system, the importance of making positive decisions, and how law enforcement works with youth in the community. The program provided students with valuable insight while encouraging open discussion and engagement.

We were excited to welcome 74 Mathew Whaley Elementary School students to our new police station for the 1st Grade Police Academy Graduation! 🎓🚓

Hosted by SRO Gholson, the students enjoyed pizza, toured the new station, and celebrated completing the program alongside officers and staff. Throughout the academy, students learned about safety, teamwork, and the important role law enforcement plays in our community.

Thank you to Mathew Whaley Elementary School for partnering with us to create such a positive and memorable experience for these students. Congratulations to all of our graduates! 👏
