Late Sunday morning with Birds In The ’Burg 🌿🐦

Everything is starting to come alive… the trees are that bright spring green, the yard is lush and blooming, and we had a light drizzle early this morning with temps around 50°. You can feel the season shifting.

The birds didn’t mind one bit—if anything, they showed up even more.

No filters, no added sounds… just real backyard wildlife doing its thing.

If you listen closely, you might catch:

Northern Cardinals, Eastern Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Wrens, and Chipping Sparrows.

Even a few minutes of this kind of natural sound can help reset your focus better than scrolling ever will.

We hung a birdseed bell behind our stone birdbath, thinking the birds would enjoy it.

They didn’t have a chance to get to it.

But the Squirrels In The ’Burg sure did.

They came through the trellis openings like they had reservations—climbing, hanging upside down, sitting on the birdbath, and going right back for more.

Total takeover.

Spring hasn’t filled in the vines yet, so the trellis is wide open… which basically turned it into a squirrel playground.

If you need a good laugh or just want to watch nature do its thing for a bit, this one’s worth it.

Spring is starting to show up in the best way here in Williamsburg… 🌿🐦

We’ve been seeing more activity at the feeder, including a male Northern Cardinal (first one we’ve spotted!), Mourning Doves, and our regular Red-bellied Woodpeckers making their rounds again.

It’s one of those simple, peaceful things that’s easy to miss—but once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.

☕ Even a few quiet minutes watching and listening can reset your whole mood.
I put together a short video from this weekend if anyone wants to relax for a bit and see what’s been visiting lately.

💬 If you’re into birdwatching—have you noticed any new birds showing up where you are?

She Lost Her Nursery Before Her Eggs Were Even Laid.
An Eastern Bluebird returns to the exact dead oak she chose weeks ago, finding only a flat stump and sawdust in the pale morning light.

We assume removing a dead, leafless tree from our garden is simply harmless property maintenance.

In reality, standing dead trees (snags) are the crucial, interconnected housing market of the local ecosystem. Right now in March, native cavity-nesters like Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis, Status: Secure) and Downy Woodpeckers are actively returning to the specific holes they scouted all winter. When that tree is suddenly felled, the mother is displaced mid-pregnancy. She cannot simply carve a new cavity in a day. Stressed and homeless, her body may reabsorb the eggs, sacrificing an entire generation of vital spring insect regulators.

You can prevent this silent eviction. Leave safe, dead trees standing as vital habitat, and put up species-specific nesting boxes well before the March scouting season begins.

You didn't just remove a dead plant. You erased a mother's future before it even began.

☕🐦 Morning Coffee with Birds In The ’Burg 🌿

Spring is fully showing up here in Williamsburg, Virginia, and this recent morning brought one of the best lineups yet.

We had:
Carolina Chickadee, Carolina Wren, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow, Eastern Bluebirds (male & female), Red-Bellied Woodpeckers (male & female), Yellow-Rumped Warbler, and a Downy Woodpecker all making their rounds.

(And a House Wren that clearly didn’t sign the camera release form… blink and you miss him. 😂)

This is 56 minutes of real backyard wildlife—lightly compiled from live footage.

No added sounds. No staging. Just nature doing its thing.

☕🐦 Little field trip update for Birds In The ’Burg…

After ordering the Birdfy Smart Hummingbird Feeder, I decided to stop by Wild Birds Unlimited today—and thanks to the WYDaily.com write-up, they already knew about Peek At The Wild. How cool is that?! 🐦💙

They took the time to really understand my setup (which is no small task 😄) and gave some super practical advice for what we’re trying to do out here.

They actually carry the Birdfy by Netvue feeders in-store—which is dangerous information for me, because I already love these things!!

One last-minute decision I made was to skip the solar panel, and that ended up being the right call. Since we’re dealing with sugar water, keeping it out of direct sun helps prevent spoilage—something I hadn’t fully thought through.

They also recommended using Nectar Defender as the temps heat up, and we tackled our ant problem (finally 🙌). The built-in ant moat on the Birdfy is pretty small, so we added a Nectar Protector Jr dish—which should solve the ant invasion we’ve been battling with the mason jar feeder.

Now… keep your eye out 👀

We’ve got something new coming soon for our Wildlife In The ’Burg series…

Let’s just say… it involves a ground-level “bath situation” for the raccoons, squirrels, rabbits and whoever else decides to show up 😂🐾

All in all, just a really helpful visit and a great local spot if you’re into birding!

If you want to check out Birdfy feeders in person, I’d definitely recommend stopping by and letting them know Peek At The Wild sent you 😊

I appreciate the team over at Wild Birds Unlimited for taking the time—this kind of support makes building Birds In The ’Burg even more fun! 🐦💙

☕🐦 New addition coming to Birds In The ’Burg… and this one’s a game changer.

We just picked up the Birdfy Smart Hummingbird Feeder with Camera, and I’m really excited to see what shows up.

If you’ve ever watched hummingbirds, you already know… they don’t sit still, they don’t wait their turn, and half the time you miss them completely. This setup should fix that. It records automatically when they visit, sends alerts to the phone, and gives us a clear up-close view (finally 😅).

It’s also solar powered (thank goodness), has built-in protection to help keep ants and bees out, and even has AI that can recognize different hummingbird species. So yes… we’re about to get a little nerdy with it.

Honestly, this is one of those upgrades that could really level up what we’re able to share — more moments, more detail, and hopefully some really cool interactions.

We’ll see if the hummingbirds cooperate… because let’s be real, they run the show around here.

If you want to check out the feeder or grab one for yourself, just click the link. If you use it, it helps support what we’re building here (and more upgrades like this).

☕🐦 Appreciate you all being part of this — it’s been really fun watching this grow.

WE MADE THE FRONT PAGE!!! 📰🐦💙

I’m still wrapping my head around this… 🥳

🧐 “Peek at the Wild” was just a simple idea — turn a backyard bird camera into something we could watch on TV.

Now it’s a Front-Page Local News Story on WY Daily!

What started as curiosity has turned into something much bigger — a way to slow down, reconnect with nature, and hopefully bring that experience to others… especially those who can’t step outside and hear it easily for themselves anymore.

Now they can just turn on their TV. Tune into Peek At The Wild, and listen to the Nature Sounds with Birds In The 'Burg like they are right outside their window.

This is just the beginning.

If you’ve watched, liked, shared, or even just paused for a minute with the birds… Thank You! It matters more than you know.
